Neil D. Long, age 80, Sisseton, long-time Roberts County Sheriff, passed away Thursday, March 27, 2025, at his home.
Funeral Mass will be Monday, March 31, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Sisseton with Father Ken Lulf and Deacon Tim Tracy officiating. Music will be provided by Kay Nikolas and Sandi Jaspers.
Burial will be in the St. Peter's Cemetery, Sisseton. Military honors will be provided by the Otto-Quande-Renville American Legion Post 50 of Sisseton. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the American Legion. Active pallbearers will be Joshua Long, Heath Long, Terry Bubak, Lyle Bubak, Jon Long, and Darwin Kratcha.
Visitation will be Sunday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the church and will continue Monday morning one hour prior to the service at the church
Neil Dennis was born January 30, 1945, to Russell and Pearl (Solberg) Long in Sisseton. He attended rural school and graduated from New Effington High School in 1963. After finishing school, he began farming. He was also a member of the South Dakota Army National Guard from June 28, 1965, to June 27, 1971. Neil began his career in law enforcement as a city policeman in New Effington.
On December 18, 1971, Neil married Rose Ann Bubak at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Sisseton. In 1975, Neil became the Roberts County Sheriff, retiring in 2003. Neil and Rose Ann moved into Sisseton in 2015.
Neil was a longtime member and past commander of the Otto-Quande-Renville American Legion Post in Sisseton. He enjoyed volunteering in the Sisseton area. He also liked reading and watching TV.
Survivors include his wife, Rose Ann Long of Sisseton; son, Jeff and Mary Long of Sisseton; grandchildren, Abigail Long of Watertown, Joshua (Alaina Murphy) Long and Heath Long both of Sioux Falls; brother James (Cheryl) Long of Sisseton; and brother-in-law, Karl Schneider of Wahpeton, ND.
Neil was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Jerry, Richard, and Thomas; and sister, Joyce Schneider.
