Sylvester C. Homan, age 99, Browns Valley, MN, passed away Thursday, July 20, 2017, at the Browns Valley Health Center.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, July 24, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Anthony 's Catholic Church in Browns Valley with Father Gregory Frankman officiating. Music will be provided by organist Norma Jung and vocalists Michael Homan and the St. Anthony Choir.
Burial will be in the St. Anthony Cemetery, Browns Valley. Pallbearers will be grandsons, Dale Kaufman, Jr., Danny Kaufman, Bill Gibson, Jr., Gene Gibson, Kevin Schweiss, Marvin Mickelson, Michael Mickelson and Charlie Homan.
Visitation will be Sunday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. followed by a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at the church. The Eggers Funeral Home in Rosholt, SD, is in charge of arrangements.
Sylvester Christian Homan was born September 11, 1917, to Charles and Cecelia (Schmitt) Homan in St. Leo, MN. He was baptized, confirmed and was an altar server at the St. Leo Catholic Church and attended the St. Leo Catholic School through the eighth grade. He worked on the family farm and for various farmers. Later Sylvester ventured to Fairfax, MN, and worked at the Red Star Café and for farmers.
Sylvester married Marcella "Sally" Timm on June 25, 1940, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Browns Valley. They farmed in Arthur Township for 24 years. In 1964, they moved to Browns Valley and Sylvester took up carpentry. In 1979, he built their house.
Sylvester served on the township and school boards. He loved to golf. After retiring he still took on small jobs. He enjoyed gardening, fishing when he could, wood carving and crafts. He hung up his tools in 2015.
Sylvester entered the Browns Valley Health Center on December 28, 2016. He passed away July 20, at the age of 99 years, 10 months, and 9 days old.
Sylvester is survived by his wife of 77 years, Sally; children, Ruth Mae (Bill) Gibson of Browns Valley, James (Pat) Homan of Talladega, AL, Helen (Fred) Schweiss of Courtland, MN, and Margaret Wilson of St. James, MO; son-in-law, Dale Kaufman, Sr., of St. James, MO; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Jake (Helen) Homan of Cambridge, MN, and Eugene Homan of Ortonville, MN; and many nieces and nephews.
Sylvester is preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Joann Kaufman; son-in-law, Cottie Wilson; a great-granddaughter, Ashley Anderson Walter; and 12 siblings.
