Shirley Ann Metz, 88, Browns Valley, MN, passed away on Sunday, March 12, 2023, at the Browns Valley Nursing Home.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, April 10, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Browns Valley. The Christian Mothers will say the rosary at 9:45 a.m. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services. Fr. John Paul Knopik will celebrate the Mass and inurnment will be at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Browns Valley at a later date.

Shirley Ann (Ziemer) Metz was born on March 18, 1934, the fifth child to Walter and Adalon (Sykora) Ziemer in rural Roberts County, SD. She attended country school, graduating from Browns Valley School in 1952.
On July 10, 1952, Shirley was united in marriage to James Walter Metz at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Browns Valley. To this union, five children were born: Ann, Mary, Robert, Donald and David. In their early years, Jim was in the Army stationed near Nuremberg, Germany from 1955 to 1957. They were farmers residing in Folsum Township near Browns Valley until Jim's passing on January 18, 1990. Shirley moved into Browns Valley shortly thereafter. She moved into Edgewood Assisted Living in Sisseton in August 2022 and Browns Valley Health Center in February 2023.
Shirley was employed at Metz Furniture, Senior Meals on Wheels, was an Avon lady, and owned her own business "Silk Flowers by Shirley." She was a homemaker and tutored many children with their learning needs.
She was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church and Choir, Daughters of Isabella, Christian Mother's, Ladies Guild, and taught CCD classes. She also was involved in the American Legion Auxiliary, Browns Valley Community Choir, Lakeside Mixers, Red Hats, and many bridge card playing ladies groups.
Shirley always had time to help her family. She will be remembered for her famous French toast at summer lake vacations. She always had a hug waiting for the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her love for flowers was shown in her home and yard.
Shirley is survived by her sons: Robert (Karen) of Peever, SD, Donald (Mary) of Donnelly, MN, and David (Julie) of Browns Valley, MN; 14 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; her sister, Beverly Paulson of Ada, MN; and her sisters-in-law, June Helgeson of Sisseton, SD, and Mary Metz of Arizona.
Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, James; infant daughter, Ann; daughter, Mary; son-in-law, David Nudell; brothers and sisters, Gordon Ziemer, Galen Ziemer, Marjorie (Edward) Metz, and Phyllis Ziemer; and brothers-in-law, Eugene Paulson, Raymond (LaVerne) Metz, and Leo (Sheri) Metz.
