Sharon Ann Cornelius, age 80, of Rosholt, SD, passed away peacefully on January 25, 2017, in her home with her family at her side.
Funeral services will be Monday, January 30, at 10:30 a.m. at Bethania Lutheran Church in Rosholt with Rev. Nancy Quatier officiating. Music will be provided by organist Ruby Larsen and vocalist Lana Sand.
Burial will be in the Bethania Cemetery, Rosholt. Pallbearers will be Jon Cornelius, Jim Cornelius, Joe Cornelius, Steve Cornelius, Jordan Cornelius and Jim Sayovitz.
Visitation will be Sunday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Eggers Funeral Home in Rosholt and will continue Monday one hour prior to the service at the church.
Sharon was born May 27, 1936, to Herbert and Beatrice (Hovland) Mundt at Peabody Hospital in Webster, SD. She was baptized and confirmed at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Waubay, SD. Sharon lived in Ortley, SD, through her eighth grade year, then moved to Sisseton and graduated from Sisseton High School in 1954. After high school, she attended college graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree from Northern State University in 1958 and with a Master of Science degree from South Dakota State University in 1961 in Physical Education.
On June 15, 1963, Sharon married Stanley Cornelius at Grace Lutheran Church in Sisseton. To this union four children were born: Jon, Jill, Jim and Joe. Sharon taught in the Rosholt School District for 35 years and coached track for 25 years. She enjoyed coaching track and coaching at the many State Track Meets. In 1994, she was affected by Multiple Sclerosis, which made it difficult to continue coaching. Sharon retired from teaching in 2000.
During her retirement, Sharon kept extremely busy; she was an active member of the Bethania Lutheran Church, American Legion Auxiliary, Eastern Star, Grace Circle, Monday Morning Coffee Klatch, and Multiple Sclerosis Support Group. Additionally, she served on the Rosholt Housing Commission. Sharon enjoyed quilting, gardening, and baking, along with following and attending the grandchildren's sporting activities, traveling from Shakopee, MN, to Thief River Falls, MN, and from Sauk Centre, MN, to Sisseton, SD, as well as an occasional basketball game at Wayne State College in Wayne, NE.
Sharon leaves to mourn her husband of 53 years, Stanley; along with four children, Jon (Vicki) Cornelius of Shakopee, MN, Jill (Jim) Sayovitz of Sauk Centre, MN, Jim (Stephanie) Cornelius of Wahpeton, ND, and Joe (Jill) Cornelius of Thief River Falls, MN; eleven grandchildren, Lindsey, Ashley, Alicia, Jordan, Gena, Corbin, JJ and Jett Cornelius, and Kali, Kayla and Kyle Sayovitz; one great-granddaughter, RemyJo Cornelius; a brother, Herbert Mundt, Jr.; and sisters-in-law, Marian Nelson, and Lenore, Darleen and Gloria Cornelius.
Sharon is preceded in death by her parents, Herbert and Beatrice Mundt; a sister, Roberta Johnson; her father and mother-in-law, Oscar and Mayme Cornelius; and brothers-in-law, Bud (Agnes), Curt, Charley and Ron Cornelius, and Darrell Nelson.
