Royce Hanson

Royce Alvin Hanson born January 2, 1942, rode into Heaven, peacefully, on his favorite horse on August 24, 2024.  He is survived by his brother, Devon; his daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Brent Allen; his grandchildren, their spouses and children, Emily Clarke (Byron), Adeline and Remi; Jerod (Machelle), Kenzleigh and Eliza.  Also, by his wife of nearly 56 years, Laurel (Hardie).  He is preceded in death by his parents, Esther and Alvin Hanson; and his son, his best friend, Jeffrey Royce Alvin Hanson.

Royce made Esther and Alvin "Babe" first time parents in their humble home on the Great Plains of northeastern South Dakota, and brought much joy to their lives.  Though raised on a farm, he had a yearning to become a cowboy at a young age.  He got his start in the cattle country of central South Dakota near the Missouri Breaks.  The invaluable experiences working at nearly 20 ranches in 40 plus years, and people he worked with, would form him into a top hand.  All with his wife and family in tote, many happy memories and friendships formed.  Though he may have tried different vocations, he would return to his first love of being horseback, working for ranches.

When not horseback, Royce could be found teaching himself various skills related to ranch life.  For example, he enjoyed raising and training working cow dogs.  Good with his hands, he also taught himself how to make and repair various kinds of horse tack.  Whether working with rawhide or horsehair, he would share the process with his family!  He was also an avid reader, especially enjoying history, and true stories of life in the West.

A kind, humble, sincere man, Royce was an excellent family man and friend to many.  He will be greatly missed.  He wouldn't want any of us to be sad for him.  He enjoyed his life as an established cowboy, as well as the love of family and friends.

Please join us to honor the life of Royce with a Celebration of Life on September 21, 2024, at 1:30 p.m. at the Rosholt Community Center, 16 E. Main St., Rosholt, SD.  It is his wish that his family and friends would gather and share memories, stories, and experiences of him and his life.
