Devoted Husband, Father, Grandfather and Great-Grandfather Richard Louis Braun passed away at the age of 92 years on Thursday, January 1, 2015, at the Northeast Care & Rehabilitation Center, Rosholt, SD. He was surrounded by his loving family when he left his earthly bounds.

Mass of Christian Burial was Monday, January 5, at 10:30 a.m. at St. John's Catholic Church in Rosholt with Father Jerome Ranek and Father Stanley Wieser officiating. Music was provided by organist Pat Keaveny and vocalists Lisa Althoff and Jim Arnhalt.

Burial was in the St. Nicholas Cemetery, rural Rosholt. Military honors were provided by the Read Veflin American Legion Post 180 of New Effington. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Rosholt Area Threshermen's Association. Active pallbearers were Richard's grandsons ~ Jonathon Eggers, Jeremy Eggers, Ryan Braun, Christopher Larson, and Jordan Braun; and grandsons-in-law ~ Tony Satrang, Al Phillips, Scott O'Hare, and Ethan Bahr.

Visitation was Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Eggers Funeral Home in Rosholt. There was a prayer service at 3:00 p.m. at the church. Visitation continued Monday one hour prior to the service at the church.

Richard was born September 30, 1922, at White Rock, SD, to Henry and Mary (Kraus) Braun. He attended Moreland country school through the 8th grade and then helped on the family farm. On November 2, 1944, Richard joined the United States Navy and was stationed in the Philippines. He received the American Area Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Area Ribbon, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, and the World War II Victory Ribbon for his service. After he was honorably discharged June 23, 1946, he returned to the farm north of Rosholt. On September 12, 1951, Richard married Gladys Keller of Tintah, MN, at St. Gall's Catholic Church, Tintah.

While Richard was active in farming, he also served as township treasurer. In 1987 Richard and Gladys retired and moved to their home in Rosholt. He was very active in the Rosholt Historical Museum, where he served as treasurer; Rosholt Improvement Association; Rosholt Threshermen and the Northeast Ambulance. Richard took pride in planting and maintaining the flowers around Rosholt. He was awarded Roberts County Volunteer of the Year in 2001 and in 2013 was Rosholt Volunteer of the Year.

Richard was blessed with a strong Catholic faith. He was a lifelong member of St. John's Catholic Church in Rosholt, where he served as usher and Eucharistic minister.

Some of his fondest memories were golfing, bowling, playing cards with family and friends, summers at the lake with his family and watching his sons farm.

Richard is survived by his wife of 63 years, Gladys; six children, Peggy Eggers (Don Steuve) of Graceville, MN, Dick (Lisa) Braun of Rosholt, Joan (Tim) Renelt of Aberdeen, SD, Annette (Neil) Larson of Billings, MT, Jack (Kris) Braun of Wahpeton, ND, and Greg (Linda) Braun of Rosholt; twelve grandchildren, Jonathon (Lisa Stevens) Eggers, Jeremy (Wendy) Eggers, Ryan (Emily Dotson) Braun, Keri (Tony) Satrang, Tanya (Al Phillips) Renelt, Jenni (Scott) O'Hare, Christopher Larson, Jordan Braun, Brittney (Ethan) Bahr, Morgan Braun, Alyssa Braun and Kaylin Braun; six great-grandchildren; and two step great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by sisters, Henrietta Klein of Rosholt and Marietta Bullis of Fergus Falls, MN; brothers, Gilbert Braun and Donald (Anna Mae) Braun of Rosholt; and sisters-in-law, Gertrude Braun of Breckenridge, MN, and Margaret Braun of Rosholt.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Mary Braun; son-in-law, Larry Eggers; brothers, Edwin, Delmar and Maurice; brothers-in-law, William Klein and Rodney Bullis; and sisters-in-law, Dorothy Braun and Marcella Braun.

The family gives special thanks to the staff of Northeast Care & Rehabilitation Center in Rosholt. We are grateful for the warm and loving care they gave to Dad over the past 1-½ years.
