Orval B. Kuschel, 84, Browns Valley, MN, died Friday, April 2, 2010, at the Coteau des Prairies Hospital in Sisseton, SD.
Funeral services were Saturday, April 10, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. at the United Methodist Presbyterian Church in Browns Valley with Rev. Anna Williamson officiating.  Music was provided by organist Janet LeClair and a local choir.
Burial was in the Valley View Cemetery, Browns Valley.  Honorary pallbearers were all of Orval's friends and neighbors, the staff and residents of the Browns Valley Health Center and Dr. Judy Beumer.  Active pallbearers were Gene Bartz, Roy Bartz, Dave Kuschel, Larry Pelzel, John Pelzel, Eric Anderson, Mike Boseth and Douglas Boseth.
Visitation was Friday, April 9, from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Presbyterian Church in Browns Valley.
Orval was born May 17, 1925, in Graceville, MN, to Edward and Bessie (Boyd) Kuschel.  He was baptized and confirmed at the Browns Valley Presbyterian Church.  He attended country school at Grant #4 and graduated from the Morris Ag School in 1944.  After finishing school, he began farming with his brothers.
In 1951, Orval married Donna Jean Anderson at the United Methodist parsonage in Beardsley.  He continued to farm in Bryant and Grant Townships until having a farm accident in November 2008.  He raised and loved dairy cows, Herefords, and especially enjoyed the calving seasons.  Orval also did commercial fishing for the Piechowski Brothers.
Orval was a member of the Browns Valley School board, township board, and the Valley View Cemetery board.  He also served on the church council, parish council, was head usher for years, and was instrumental in building the new church.
Orval's hobbies included deer hunting, fishing at Jim Creek (especially in the Spring), and snow sledding.  He enjoyed checking the cows with his four-wheeler and riding around Browns Valley in his golf cart.  He was also an avid Minnesota Vikings fan.
Survivors include his wife, Donna Jean of Browns Valley; children, Peggy Kuschel of Sioux Falls, SD, April (Joe) Staehling of Big Stone City, SD, LaVonne (Kirk) Akerson of Rosholt, Ellen (Mark) Harr of Columbia, SD, Joe (Ginger) Kuschel of Browns Valley, Orlou "Tootsie" Kuschel of Aberdeen, SD, Deborah Kuschel of Aberdeen, and Colleen (Greg) Ellingson of Browns Valley; 15 grandchildren, Holly (Lynn) Solberg, Ryan Ellingson, Holly (Josh) Roark, Katie Ellingson, Anthony and Matthew Kuschel, Cameo (Ben Palleson) Kuschel, Riley Kuschel, Luke Harr, Justina Kuschel, Kody (Christy Koehler) Akerson, Hannah Akerson, and Joey, Nicholas and Samantha Staehling; 3 great-grandchildren, Jaxon and Nora Solberg, and Emry Roark; a brother, Edwin (Darlys) Kuschel of Browns Valley; and a sister, Ruth (Arvin) Bartz of Browns Valley.
Orval was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Roger (Gladys) Kuschel, a sister, Effie (Harold) Boseth, and a son-in-law, Scott Sagehorn.
