Mavis L. Wagner, 90, died Wednesday, August 4, 2010, at the Rosholt Care Center, Rosholt, SD. Funeral services were Saturday, August 7, at 11:00 a.m. at Walla Lutheran Church, rural New Effington, SD, with Rev. Suzanne Benidt officiating. Music was provided by organist Helen Johnson. Burial was in the Walla Lutheran Cemetery. Pallbearers were Jeff Wagner, Mike Wagner, Scott Wika, Todd Solberg, Mitch Wall, Justin Wolfswinkel, and Mathew Klein. Visitation was Friday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Eggers Funeral Home in Rosholt and continued Saturday one hour prior to the service at the church. Mavis Lorraine Johnson was born January 26, 1920, to Gustav and Olga (Hull) Johnson in Hart Township, near Victor, SD. She was baptized and confirmed in Walla Lutheran Church. She attended school through eighth grade and helped on the family farm. On August 20, 1944, Mavis married Math Wagner at the St. Joseph parsonage in rural Rosholt. They resided in Victor where he was the elevator manager. Mavis was a homemaker, and together they raised five children. Math died in October 1971. Mavis moved into Rosholt in 1977. On April 8, 1978, Mavis married Lawrence Wagner at St. John's Catholic Church in Rosholt. They lived in their home in Rosholt until Lawrence became ill and died in September of 2003. Mavis then entered the Rosholt Care Center. Mavis was a lifelong member of Walla Lutheran Church. She was very active in their Ladies Aid and circle activities, serving as an officer in various capacities and helping to make many quilts and kits for missions. She was also a volunteer with the nursing home auxiliary. She loved to collect salt and pepper shakers and recipes and did lots of baking, canning, and gardening. Survivors include her children, Michael Wagner of Las Vegas, NV, Tom (Harriet) Wagner of Rosholt, Mary Peterson of Fargo, ND, Patsy (Elroy) Klein of Rosholt, and Dale Wagner of Champlin, MN; eight grandchildren, Christopher Wagner, Jeff (Val) Wagner, Jill (Scott) Wika, Michael (Coleen) Wagner, Carrie (Todd) Solberg, Joan (Mitch) Wall, Mathew Klein, and Sarah (Justin) Wolfswinkel; eight great-grandchildren, Jory and Jena Wagner, Brady Larson, Kayden Wika, Taylor Wagner, Carolyn and Garret Solberg, and Griffin Wolfswinkel; and two sisters, Helen Johnson of Rosholt and Karen (LeRoy) Edlund of Cyrus, MN. Mavis was preceded in death by her husbands; her parents; her sister, Elaine; and numerous brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
