Maurice J. Braun, 80, Rosholt, SD, passed away Monday, August 18, 2014, at the Northeast Care and Rehabilitation Center in Rosholt.
Funeral Mass will be Friday, August 22, at 10:30 a.m. at St. John's Catholic Church in Rosholt with Father Jerome Ranek and Father Stanley Wieser officiating. Music will be provided by organist Lana Sand.
Burial will be in the St. Nicholas Cemetery, rural Rosholt. Military honors will be provided by the Leo American Legion Post 48 of Rosholt and the Read Veflin American Legion Post 180 of New Effington, SD. Pallbearers will be Rocky Bullis, Curt Alsaker, Paul Braun, Greg Braun, Billy Klein and Ken Braun.
Visitation will be Thursday from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Eggers Funeral Home in Rosholt. There will be a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at the church. Visitation will continue Friday one hour prior to the service at the church.
Maurice Joseph Braun was born September 26, 1933, to Henry and Mary (Kraus) Braun on the family farm in White Rock Township, Roberts County, SD. After finishing eight years of country school, Maurice worked on the family farm. On December 7, 1955, Maurice was drafted into the U.S. Navy, and was honorably discharged August 19, 1957. He took over the family farm in 1958.
On August 29, 1959, Maurice married Dorothy Scholl at Spalding, NE. Maurice and Dorothy continued to farm as well as raising cattle and pigs. They moved into Rosholt in 1996 and built a new home in 1998. Dorothy passed away on August 15, 2008, after nearly 50 years of marriage. Maurice made his home in the Rosholt Care Center in April 2014.
Maurice was a member of St. John's Catholic Church in Rosholt and the Catholic Order of Foresters, where he served as secretary for several years. He also belonged to the Roberts County Pork Producers and the Rosholt Area Threshermen's Association.
Maurice enjoyed farming and raising pigs and cattle. He also enjoyed reading, especially history, and had a keen memory of history and dates. In their later years, Maurice and Dorothy enjoyed dancing and traveling.
Survivors include four children, Joyce (Wayne) Metzen of Wahpeton, ND, Marlys (Bill) Nicolai of Milnor, ND, Tim (Cheryl) Braun of Rosholt, and Natalie (Mike) Fulton of Wellington, New Zealand; son-in-law, Bernard King of Wyndmere, ND; ten grandchildren, Austin Metzen, Sherri, Stephanie and Summer King; Adam and Isaac Nicolai, and Ashley, Elizabeth, Patrick and Jacob Fulton; sisters, Henrietta Klein of Rosholt, and Marietta (Rodney) Bullis of Fergus Falls, MN; brothers, Richard (Gladys) Braun, Gilbert Braun, and Donald (Anna Mae) Braun all of Rosholt; sisters-in-law, Gertrude Braun of Breckenridge, MN, and Margaret Braun of Rosholt.
Maurice was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Dorothy; daughter, Phyllis; infant daughter, Mary; brothers, Delmar and Edwin; brother-in-law, William Klein, and sister-in-law, Marcella Braun.
A farmer is one of God's gifts to mankind. May he rest in peace; the harvest is complete.
