Marlys (Akerson Schlachter) Chase, long time Edina resident, died on June 24th at home, of pneumonia. She was 92.
Marlys was born in Rosholt, South Dakota and educated in a one-room schoolhouse. She was Robert's County salutatorian before transferring to Minneapolis, where she graduated from Washburn High School with honors in 1947. After 2 years at Gustavus Adolphus, she transferred to the U of MN. In 1950 she married Edward Schlachter. They had 4 children. She is survived by 3: Stephen Schlachter (Cindy Helmbacher), Ann Falldin (Steve Teynor), Nancy Nash (Roger). Six stepchildren: Mary David, Barb (Tom) Vescio, Jean (Dan) Hasty, Patrick (Patricia) Chase, Mike (Cindy) Chase, Libby (John) Christianson, sister Jeanette Danger; 18 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by son David Jon (d.1958); her first husband Edward (d.1968); her second husband, G. Raymond Chase, whom she married in 1980 (d. 2004); step-sons Jerry and Tom; and brothers, Sherwin Akerson and Byron Akerson.
Marlys was born on January 20, 1930 to George and Alma (Skibenes) Akerson, first-generation children of Swedish and Norwegian immigrants. Her father was a farmer and her mother a schoolteacher. They imbued in her a lifelong love of learning, reading, poetry and an interest in current events and politics. She enjoyed bridge, travel and her many friendships. It was an eclectic group, gathered from high school, college, neighbors, book, bridge, investment clubs & golf leagues. She served as an election judge for more than 30 years, volunteered at Fairview Southdale Hospital, the Mpls. Institute of Arts; was a charter member of St. Stephen's Lutheran Church and subsequently a member of Mount Olivet Lutheran Church for nearly 50 years. But above all, she cherished the time spent with her family.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, July 8 at 12 noon, with visitation 1 hour prior at Mount Olivet Church, 5025 Knox Ave. S, reception to follow. Private interment. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to Cathedral of the Pines Camp. washburn.mcreavy.com Edina Chapel 952-920-3996
