Margaret Smaldone

Margaret (Hamling) Smaldone, age 79, Hermosa Beach, CA, passed away Friday, August 15, 2025, in Torrance, CA.

Funeral Services will be Wednesday, September 3, at 1:00 p.m. at the Eggers Funeral Home in Rosholt with Father Ken Lulf officiating.

Burial will be in the St. Nicholas Cemetery, rural Rosholt.  Pallbearers will be Steven Harles, Terry Neuberger, Jared Hamling, Mike Whempner, Paul Hamling, and Jim Hohertz.

Margaret Mary Mildred Hamling was born August 15, 1946, to Henry Sr. and Theresa (Herding) Hamling in Sisseton, SD.  She attended country school at Harmon #2 South and graduated from Rosholt High School in 1964.  She furthered her education at Sioux Valley Hospital School of Radiology in Sioux Falls, SD.

Margaret was employed in several areas in the radiology field over the years including the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI; Harbor General Hospital in Torrance, CA; Daniel Freeman Hospital and Kerlan and Jobe Orthopedic Clinic in Inglewood, CA.  She was also self employed as a radiological technologist working in various orthopedic offices in the Los Angeles area since 1979.

On December 26, 1967, Margaret married Marco Smaldone at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Ann Arbor, MI.  They resided in Hermosa Beach since July 1973 except for two years (1977-1979) living in Hong Kong, China.

Margaret's hobbies included skiing, bicycling, fishing, tennis, and beach sports.  She was an excellent cook and enjoyed sewing, quilting, and other crafts.

Margaret loved traveling with her husband throughout Europe, Southeast Asia, Australia, and New Zealand.  Her greatest pleasures were going to the opera, driving her Corvette convertible, wearing hats, and enjoying her walks on the beach.

Survivors include her husband of 57 years, Marco of Hermosa Beach; siblings, Eleanor (Theodore) Harles of Lidgerwood, ND, Dennis (Bonnie) Hamling of Rosholt, and Darlene (Donald) Halseth of Riverdale, ND; brother-in-law, Larry Neuberger of Eden, SD; and sister-in-law, Gloria Hamling of Bismarck, ND.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry Sr. and Theresa Hamling; and siblings, Raymond Hamling, Delores (Lawrence) Harles, Mariann (Lee) Whempner, Dorothy Neuberger, Henry Jr. (Sharon) Hamling, and Anthony Hamling.
