Marcella Kathryn Braun, 81, Rosholt, SD, died peacefully after a short illness, surrounded by loved ones, on Tuesday, October 5, 2010, at Innovis Hospital in Fargo, ND.
Funeral mass was Saturday, October 9, at 10:30 a.m. at St. John's Catholic Church in Rosholt with Father Dennis Deis, O.M.I., officiating. Music was provided by organist Cindy Marohl and pianist Marlee Braun. Vocalists were Marcella's granddaughters, Vanessa Hogg and Marlee Braun.
Burial was in the St. Nicholas Cemetery, rural Rosholt. Honorary pallbearers will be Our Lady's Rosary Makers and active pallbearers were Marcella's sons, Kevin, Gary, Duane, Paul, Lyle and Leon Braun. Gift carriers were Marcella's daughters, Debra, Linda and Carol.
Visitation was Friday, October 8, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Eggers Funeral Home in Rosholt. There was a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. in the church. Visitation continued Saturday one hour prior to the service at the church.
Marcella Kathryn was born to Martin and Mella (Bergstreser) Klein on December 29, 1928, in Victor Township, SD. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Philip's Catholic Church in Hankinson, ND. She attended grade school in Greendale Township and graduated from St. Francis Academy in Hankinson in 1944. After graduation, Marcella did office work at a seminary in Manitowoc, WI, and later worked as a key punch operator in Minneapolis.
On September 2, 1953, Marcella married Gilbert Braun at St. Philip's Catholic Church in Hankinson. They bought a farm nine miles northeast of Rosholt where they farmed and continued to live after retiring.
Marcella enjoyed embroidering (including many dishtowels and tablecloths as gifts for others), gardening, canning, baking, (she was famous for her cinnamon rolls), family celebrations, visiting with relatives and friends, playing Whist, helping her children with their 4-H projects, and feeding birds, squirrels and stray cats. She especially enjoyed her grandchildren. In her later years, Marcella enjoyed bus tours with Gilbert.
Marcella was still a member of the St. John's Altar Society and for many years, made rosaries with Our Lady's Rosary Makers. She was also involved in the pro-life movement since the mid-1970s.
Marcella is survived by her loving husband of 57 years, Gilbert; and by children Kevin (Kay) Braun of Fargo, Gary (Lisa) Braun of Roswell, GA, Debra Braun of St. Paul, MN, Linda (Gary) Ostby of New Effington, SD, Duane (Maureen) Braun of Fairmount, ND, Carol (special friend Deb Sweda) Braun of Bellingham, MA, Paul Braun of Rosholt, Lyle (Jackie) Braun of Brookings, SD, and Leon Braun of Fargo; grandchildren, Emily (Ryan) Hahn, Cassandra (Cory) Metcalf, Vanessa (Mike) Hogg, Liza Braun, Mark Ziebart, Chad (Leigh Ann) Ziebart, Marlee Braun, Nathan Braun, William Braun, and Daniel Braun; great-grandchildren, Deegan Hahn, Taylor Ziebart and another great-grandchild on the way; step grandchildren, Brandon (Stacy) Ostby, Ashley (Jason) Thomas; step great-grandchildren, Alexis, Xaiver and Tia Thomas and Deegan Ostby; brothers, Aldean (Edith) Klein of Fingal, ND, and Eugene Klein of Hankinson; sister, Lavon Klein of Sioux City, IA; and many other relatives and friends.
Marcella was preceded in death by her parents; infant daughter, Mary; and sister, Sharon Tucker.
