Marcella Bridget (Mooney) Braun was born January 15, 1922, to James and Margaret (Early) Mooney, rural Hillsboro, Traill County, ND. She was born the seventh of nine children. She attended a Catholic boarding school in Oakwood, ND, then returned home her senior year and graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1939.

She entered the US Navy Waves on October 31, 1944, and served as a Ship's Cook Second Class until July 10, 1946. She served in Bronx, New York, and at Treasure Island in California during this time. Marcella was decorated with the American Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. She was a member of both the Read-Veflin American Legion Post 180 and Auxiliary Unit 180 in New Effington. She was the oldest female veteran in Roberts County, SD.

On October 20, 1948, Marcella married Vincent Braun at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Hillsboro, ND, and they were married for 68 years. They settled on a farm near Rosholt and in 1963 moved to a farm outside of New Effington. Marcella's three daughters wore her wedding dress for their two weddings in 1977 and one in 2007.

As a young girl, Marcella learned to cook by helping her mother serve the hired men on their farm. Her cooking experiences continued as she cooked for the Bishop and other priests of the Fargo diocese, at White Drug in downtown Fargo, and at the Claire City grade school in the early 1970's. Marcella tended the family vegetable and flower gardens and taught her children how to preserve food, bake and cook. She was known for her wonderfully delicious homemade pies and making good old-fashioned egg coffee. She also enjoyed tending to her many flower gardens. In her later years she enjoyed crocheting and made many afghans for her family and donated many for community events.

Marcella enjoyed traveling with Vincent to meetings for the Catholic Order of Foresters and corn dealer meetings. These were held in South Dakota and across the country including the cities of Boston and Chicago and in Hawaii.

Marcella was an avid supporter of her children's sport and music activities. She attended most all home football and basketball games and track events and traveled to as many away games as possible. She desired for her children to learn how to play music so she drove them for lessons for many instruments.

Marcella will be remembered for her hospitality, her gentle spirit, always giving nature and prayerful, trusting attitude.

Marcella is preceded in death by her parents; her husband Vincent; and all her siblings, including brothers Leo, Walter, Vincent, and Francis; and sisters Mary, Sister Agnes, Margaret and Gertrude.

She is survived by her children Barbara (Les) Herbranson of Fargo, ND, Anthony (Edith) Braun of Lafayette, CO, Douglas (Susan) Braun of Omro, WI, Paul (Mercedita) Braun of San Diego, CA, Gerard Braun of New Effington, SD, Janet (Jeff) Roeder of Milnor, ND, Francis Braun of New Effington, SD, and Collette (John) Etzell of Shoreview, MN; her grandchildren and great grandchildren; in-laws, Rita Braun, Adela Gustafson, Gerald Braun, Rose Braun, Ingrid Braun, Marlene Luick, Albert and Marceil Braun, and Raymond and Sharon Braun; and dear friends Art and Connie Brandenburger.
