Leroy Likness

Leroy E. Likness, age 87, New Effington, passed away Tuesday, April 23, 2024, at Tekawitha Living Center in Sisseton.

Funeral Services will be Tuesday, April 30, at 10:30 a.m. at Faith Lutheran Church in New Effington with Vicar Pat Schubert officiating.  Music will be provided by organist Deb Bredvik and vocalists Melanie Yost, Janeen Kohl, and Linda Loberg.

Burial will be in the Palestine Cemetery, rural Veblen. Urn bearer will be Dirk Waite. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.

Leroy Elwood Likness was born on August 8, 1936, to Leonard and Ella (Nelson) Likness in Veblen.  Leroy grew up and attended school in Veblen.

On November 9, 1962, Leroy married Burma Hagenson.  They settled in Veblen and raised two daughters, Brenda and Nadine.  Leroy worked at Lahman Manufacturing in Hecla.

On May 27, 1989, Leroy married Eileen Markuson.  They enjoyed traveling and wintering in Texas and Kansas for over 20 years.  Leroy worked at National Beef packing plant in Liberal, KS.  After retiring, they moved to New Effington.

Leroy's hobbies included dancing, fishing, and playing cards.  He also enjoyed cruising around New Effington on his golf cart.  Above all, Leroy loved spending time with family and helping out anywhere he was needed.

Survivors include his daughters, Brenda (Mike) Ceroll and Donna (Mario) Marquez; sons, Gerald (Judy) Markuson and Duane (Marcie) Markuson; grandchildren, Amber (Brent) Fortin, Sam (Spencer) Hanson, Dirk Waite, Dale (Donva) Scott, Corina (Frank) Scott, Troy (Angie) Eisenbeisz, Dianna (Chris) Bunch, Tara (Tony) Casey, Alisha Markuson, Tamra (Brad) Lang, Codi Whittern, and Jenela (Joe) Holt; 23 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren; brother, Neil (Bev) Likness; and daughter Nadine's longtime friend Tom Mitchell.

Leroy was preceded in death by his wife, Eileen; daughters, Nadine Waite and Diane Eisenbeisz; son, Donald Markuson; parents, Leonard and Ella; sister, Julaine (Helmer); and brother, Bobby Likness.
