Funeral services were Thursday, June 14, at 10:30 a.m. at the Emmanuel United Church of Christ in Hankinson, ND, with Rev. Teresa Heupel Buckhaus officiating. Music was provided by organist Paul Buckhaus.
Burial was in the United Cemetery, Hankinson. Pallbearers were Dr. Ed Foeltz, Harley Hanson, Marc Williams, Chuck Bellin, Roderick Lentz, and Todd Fink.
Visitation was Wednesday from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. followed by a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at the Eggers Funeral Home in Rosholt. Visitation continued Thursday one hour prior to the service at the church.
Leona Emelia was born October 21, 1911, in Belford Township, Richland County, ND, to Charles and Ida (Tiegs) Bellin. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Belford Church, rural Hankinson. She attended country school in rural Hankinson through the eighth grade.
On November 2, 1938, Leona married Edward Foeltz at the United Church of Christ in Hankinson. Ed and Leona farmed on the Foeltz farm in Victor Township north of Rosholt. Leona also worked in the Rosholt grocery store, restaurant, and Rosholt Locker. Ed and Leona retired in 1972. In 2003, they moved into Rosholt. Ed passed away on October 24, 2006. Leona then made her home in the Rosholt Care Center.
Leona was a member of the Emmanuel United Church of Christ and an honorary member of the Ladies Guild. She also belonged to the American Legion Auxiliary and most recently became a member of the SD Century Club on October 21, 2011. Leona served as a past president of the PTA, and was a Sunday school teacher and Boy Scout leader.
Leona enjoyed and loved her family, grandchildren, and friends, spending as much time as possible with them. She worked side by side on the farm with Edward. Gardening, fancy work, flowers, and crossword puzzles were her hobbies. Cooking came next. Friends and family came often; the coffee pot was always on with homemade goodies. There wasn't much Leona could not do if a neighbor or friend needed help. Leona was the one to call; she would help anyone and get the job done.
Survivors include two children Robert (Cheryl) Foeltz of Bismarck, ND, and Karen (Harlan) Hanson of Rosholt; and three grandchildren Julie (Marc) Williams, Dr. Edward Foeltz, and Harley Hanson.
Leona was preceded in death by her husband Edward; parents Charles and Ida Bellin; and siblings Clara, Anne, Verona, Minnie, Adele, Helen, Ida, Richard, Reinhard, and Bernard.
