Leo J. Herding, 87, Rosholt, SD, died Thursday, October 29, 2009, at the Countryside Inn Assisted Living in Rosholt under the care of Lakeland Hospice. Funeral services were Monday, November 2, at 10:30 a.m. at St. John's Catholic Church in Rosholt with Father Dennis Deis, O.M.I., officiating. Music was provided by organist Lana Sand and vocalists Paul and Lana Sand. Burial was in the St. Nicholas Cemetery, rural Rosholt. Honorary pallbearers were the original members of the Catholic Order of Foresters, Paul Brandenburger, Gilbert Braun, Richard Braun, Delmar Braun, Maurice Braun, Wilfred Foltz, Donald Braun, and Meinard Sand. Active pallbearers were Jim Schmit, Dan Herding, Keith Pohl, Brian Herding, Alan Sand, and Dean Brandenburger. Visitation was Sunday from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Eggers Funeral Home in Rosholt. There was a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at the church. Visitation continued Monday one hour prior to the service at the church. Leo Joseph was born June 23, 1922, on a farm ten miles northwest of Rosholt in Greendale Township, ND, to parents Anton and Elizabeth (Biewer) Herding. He attended Greendale #4 Country School. On November 8, 1950, Leo married Rosella Schmit at St. John's Catholic Church in Wahpeton, ND. To this union three children were born, Vincent, Robert, and Kenneth. Leo and Rosella lived on a farm five miles north of Rosholt until retiring from farming in 1987. They continued living on the farm with their son Kenneth. Leo enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was an original member of the Catholic Order of Foresters which was established in 1952. He was also a member of Farm Bureau. Survivors include his wife, Rosella Herding of Rosholt; two children, Robert (Susan) Herding of Hankinson, ND, and Kenneth Herding of Rosholt; a daughter-in-law, Denise Herding of Wahpeton; five grandchildren, Rebecca (Rich) Truesdell of Wahpeton, Melissa (Stuart) Schumacher of Wahpeton, Jeremiah Herding of Fairmount, ND, Jessica (Jeremy) Seelye of Fairmount, and Jonathan Herding of Hankinson; three great-grandchildren, Shea Truesdell and Jacob and Jaidyn Seelye; two brothers, Philip (Agatha) Herding of Hankinson, and Gregory (Mary Lou) Herding of Hankinson; a brother-in-law, Raymond Schmit of Wahpeton; and a sister-in-law, Marcella Bates of Detroit Lakes, MN. Leo was preceded in death by his son, Vincent; parents, Anton and Elizabeth; sisters, Theresa Hamling, Agnes Hamling, and Christina Herding; brothers, Anton Herding, Jr., Henry Herding, Nicholas Herding, and an infant brother; two sisters-in-law, Florentina Herding and Louise K. Herding; and two brothers-in-law, Henry Hamling, Sr., and Theodore Hamling.
