Kitty Thompson

Catherine "Kitty" M. (Steiner) Thompson, age 86, Sisseton, formerly of Beardsley, passed away Sunday, August 7, 2022, at Edgewood Assisted Living in Sisseton.

A Funeral Service will be held Friday, September 9, at 2:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Beardsley. Visitation will be one hour before the service. The service will be livestreamed on the Eggers Funeral Home Facebook page.

Burial will be in the Beardsley Community Cemetery.

Kitty was born on May 12, 1936, in Sisseton, South Dakota to Louie and Hilda (Opitz) Steiner.   She was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith.  She graduated from Sisseton High School in 1954.  Kitty attended Presentation Nursing School graduating in 1957 and became a registered nurse.  Her nursing career included Tekakwitha Nursing Home, a school nurse, Coteau Des Prairies and Indian Public Health Service until her retirement in 1998.  She loved providing care to her patients and was very compassionate about her job.

In 1959 she married Harold O. Johnson and the couple had four children.  In 1984 she married Charles "Chuck" Thompson and embraced his four children into the family. They enjoyed many years together before Chuck passed away in June 2001.

Kitty enjoyed traveling to and with her sister Mary and to see her children.  She enjoyed her trips to Las Vegas and an occasional trip to the local casino.  She loved to garden, feed the birds and squirrels in her yard, as well as taking care of flowers at home and tending the flowers and mowing the church grounds.  She loved to volunteer her time at the church with many activities over the years.  Many laughs and pots of coffee were shared with others!  One of her favorite pastimes was working with Mary catering and delivering Meals on Wheels.

Kitty loved to spend time with her loved ones and was very generous to family and friends in so many ways. She lost her eyesight due to Macular Degeneration and was able to remain in her home for many years due to the help of her dear friend Joan Myhre.  Kitty then moved into the Edgewood Assisted Living.  She loved the staff and residents there!!  She was frequently the bowling champ - and always commented on how busy she was there!  Every morning she would ask "Alexa" to tell her jokes so that she could share them with the other residents and staff.  She had a quick wit and enjoyed playing the occasional joke or prank, always lightening the mood.

Kitty loved her family, and especially enjoyed the grandchildren and her new great-grandchildren.  She was an "adopted" grandma for the neighbor kids (before they grew up) in Beardsley and was so happy to have them visit in her last days. She enjoyed any and all that visited.

Those that will cherish her memories are her Children - Carol (Mark) Gunderson, Donn (Mary) Johnson, Cathy Johnson (Joe Leyba) and Steven (Sheri) Johnson; her Stepchildren - Kathy (Darrel) Issendorf and Jary Thompson (Darcy Schoppe);  Grandchildren - Sean (Chelsey) Johnson, Aaron (Lexy) Johnson, Eric (Lindsey) Gunderson, and Justin Gunderson; Step Grandchildren - Jeremy Foren, Steve (Katie) Gary, Torey (Michelle) Issendorf, Melissa (Eric) Kleindl, Brady (Kristen) Thompson, Cassidy Thompson, and Jamie (Bryce) Nilson; 12 Great-Grandchildren; one Great-Great-Grandson;  Siblings - Mildred McCauley, Hildy (Bob) Radke, Patty (Wayne) Johnson, Jan (Wayne) Johnson, Myron (Belvia) Steiner, and Darrell Steiner; and Sisters-in-Law - Mary Ann and Erla Steiner.

Kitty was preceded in death by her Parents; Husband, Charles "Chuck" Thompson, Stepchildren - Howie Thompson and Cindy Thompson; and Siblings - Vernon Steiner, Kenneth Steiner and Mary Brock.

The family would like to say a very special Thank You to Bobby Jo Hamm and all the Edgewood staff for their love and care for our mother over the years, and to the Prairie Lakes Hospice Nurses Jessie and Tammy for making her last days comfortable and surrounded by those she loved.
