Kervin "Toby" Steen

Kervin "Toby" O. Steen, 80, Sisseton, passed away Tuesday, October 11, 2022, at Coteau des Prairies Hospital in Sisseton.

Funeral services will be Saturday, October 15, at 3:00 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church in New Effington with Rev. Karie Geyer officiating. Music will be provided by organist Deb Bredvik.

Burial will be in the Concordia Cemetery, rural Sisseton. Pallbearers will be Kevin Steen, Kraig Steen, Austin Grajczyk, Austin Steiner, Braimen Steen, and Riley Steen.

Visitation will be Saturday one hour prior to the service at the church.

Kervin Odean Steen was born July 28, 1942, to Odell and Doris (McKee) Steen in Sisseton.  He was baptized and confirmed at Concordia Lutheran Church, rural Sisseton.  He attended school in Grant Township and graduated from Browns Valley High School in 1961.  From 1962 to 1963, Toby worked on the Oahe Dam north of Pierre.  He then returned home, started farming, and working at Dusing Oil in Browns Valley. He also fished on a seining crew in the winter.

On February 15, 1964, Toby married Karen Martinek at Zion Lutheran Church in New Effington.  They were blessed with four children, Kevin, Koryn, Kolleen, and Kraig. Toby and Karen farmed and raised Hereford cattle in Grant Township.  From the fall of 1973 to 2010, Toby was employed at the Minn-Dak Farmers Cooperative in Wahpeton as well as operating a payloader in the winter.  Toby, Karen, and Kraig did custom combining in Kansas, Oklahoma, and South Dakota from 1995 to 2009.  Toby retired from farming in 2011.

Toby was a member of Faith Lutheran Church. His pastimes included playing cards and collecting belt buckles, guns, and caps.  Every summer he enjoyed taking his family to the Black Hills.  Toby also loved dancing with Karen on the weekends and bartending at Valley Hai.

Survivors include his wife, Karen Steen of Sisseton; children, Kevin (Cindy) Steen of Brookings, SD, Koryn Steen of Watertown, SD, Kolleen Steen of Brookings, and Kraig (Becky) Steen of Sisseton; grandchildren, Ashley (Jeremy) Wegner, Austin (Kali) Grajczyk, Tiana (Daniel) Hamilton, Kaitlyn (Ricky) Telkamp, Austin Steiner, Braimen Steen, Riley Steen, and Berklee Steen; great-grandchildren; brother, Harlen "Butch" (Deena) Steen of Raymond, MN; sister, Dorothy (Fritz) Clark Fiala of Browns Valley; and several nieces and nephews.

Toby was preceded in death by his parents, Odell and Doris; grandson, Weston Steen; brother, Carmen "Boso" Steen; and uncle, Harry Steen.
