Julius Hertel

Julius J. Hertel, 73, Rosholt, SD, formerly of Winner, SD, fought a long and brave battle, joining his Heavenly Father on November 29, 2012. Julius passed peacefully at the Rosholt Care Center, Rosholt.
Services were Friday, December 7, at 2:00 p.m. at the American Legion Post 169 in Winner with family and friends officiating. Urn attendants were Doug Muller, Roy Muller, Nathan Muller, Bob Kinyon, Lee Briggle, Derek Mentele-Rada, Kyle Moeller, Robert Rada-Ortega, Dana Rada, Cory Rada, Charles Rada, Paul Taggert, Jason Smith and Christopher Oien. Military honors were provided by Clem Mortensen American Legion Post 169. Final interment will be held at the Black Hills National Cemetery at a later date.
Julius 'Pops' James Hertel was born in McLaughlin, SD, to Emil and Katherine (Dietterle) Hertel on January 31, 1939, and confirmed in the Lutheran Church. Julius was from a family of six brothers and four sisters. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1959. After his honorable discharge, he attended trade school in Chicago for Diesel Mechanics on the GI Bill. On his return to South Dakota he joined the National Guard. Julius was a member of the Clem Mortensen Post #169 American Legion of Winner, SD. Julius worked for the Homestake Mining Company in the logging division for several years, then moved to Wyoming and worked his trade in the oil fields.
Julius met his wife Joni in Moorcroft, WY, and after three years of marriage they moved to Lodi, CA, where they lived for seven years. At this time they returned to South Dakota where Julius worked for Grossenberg Implement for several years before retiring in 2000 due to disability. He was diagnosed with lung cancer in April of 2009.
Pops was a kind, thoughtful, loving man who enjoyed visiting with people. He loved to play cards and spend time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Julius loved to tinker and was an excellent carpenter, remodeling the country home that he and Joni enjoyed so much.
He is survived by a blended family; his loving wife of 28 years Joni Hertel of Mosher, SD; daughters Julie (George) Smith of Gillette WY, Amanda Ball of LaCrosse, KS, Hope Oien of Gillette, WY, Mona (Dave) Taggart of Gregory, SD, Tina (Doug) Muller of Rosholt, SD, and Dina Schultz of Rosholt, SD; sons  Dana Rada of Winner, SD, and Cory Rada of Springfield, SD; 23 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Norman (Mary) Hertel, Iola Hertel Jochim, Margie Hertel Aldinger, Marvin (Lisa) Hertel, Marilyn Hertel Hogue, and Kenny (Virginia) Hertel; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Julius was preceded in death by his mother and father, an infant son, three brothers and one sister.
Julius will always be loved and remembered as a good man.
