Judith Lynn Carston, 68, passed away February 27, 2016, after a ten year battle with carcinoid cancer.
Funeral service will be Saturday, March 26, at 11:00 a.m. at Bethania Lutheran Church in Rosholt.
Judy was born December 5, 1947, to Olaf (Sonny) Carston and Adeline (Rehn) Carston Brue at Milbank, SD. She was the middle daughter of three.
She grew up on a farm near Stockholm, SD, and went to country school at Madison #3 for two years before the family moved to Milbank in 1956. In 1959, they moved to Webster, SD, where Judy graduated high school in 1966. She then attended Northern State University in Aberdeen, earning a bachelor's degree in education and a major in math.
Judy accepted a position teaching high school math in the Rosholt School system. She continued to teach there for 40 years until she retired in 2010. While teaching at RHS, Judy earned her library credentials and also quite often taught junior high reading and math courses. She never lost her love of math and even helped struggling students after she retired.
Judy was also the concession stand lady and the prom advisor for decades. She enjoyed meeting and visiting people as they came to buy popcorn and pop and her famous homemade hot chocolate. Although she never drove or owned a car, her garage was full...of prom props and anything that could conceivably become a prom decoration!
Judy treasured her family, usually spending the summer either in Webster with her mom and stepdad or with her sister Carol and husband Patrick at their home on Big Stone Lake. She doted on her two nephews Mark and Erik and her niece Sonja and the seven grand nieces and nephews. She loved spending time with them, especially if they were watching a movie or playing a game of canasta.
Judy was a life-long member of the Webster United Methodist Church. She was also a member of various school-related groups including SDEA/NEA and was proud of her teaching profession.
She passed away at Sanford Hospice Cottage, Sioux Falls, SD. She will be remembered for her love of family, her passion for home remodel TV shows, and her lifelong commitment to her family, friends and to the Rosholt community, her "home." She died 18 years to the date after her mother, who also died from cancer.
Judy is survived by her sisters Carol and Patrick Gaikowski and Anne and Richard Fossum, both of Wilmot, SD; nephews Mark Gaikowski and family, West Salem, WI, and Erik Gaikowski and family, Sioux Falls, SD; and niece Sonja Theisen and family, Sioux Falls; aunts Barbara Carston, Watertown SD and Katherine Adams, Minneapolis; several cousins, special friend Julie Croymans, Brookings, and many friends including the "kids" she loved so much in school. She was preceded in death by her parents, several aunts and uncles and cousins, and special friends.
She will be inurned in Milbank, next to her parents and stepdad. Eggers Funeral Home will be in charge of her services. She considered them as family and wanted them to bring her home when her time came. She was a quiet lady who loved many people and who will long be remembered.
