John D. Gutzmer
John D. Gutzmer, 67, Claire City, SD, passed away Sunday, August 30, 2015, at the Browns Valley Health Center in Browns Valley, MN.
Funeral services were Thursday, September 3, at 1:00 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church in New Effington, SD, with Pastor Cheryl Rondeau-Bassett officiating. Music was provided by organist Debra Bredvik.
Burial was in the Claire City Cemetery, Claire City, SD. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Claire City Fire Department. Active pallbearers were Dale Ostby, Bob Schultz, Delas Schultz, Scott Bostrom, Verne Wolfe, and Bill Schrader.
Visitation was Wednesday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Eggers Funeral Home in Rosholt and continued Thursday one hour prior to the service at the church.
John Darrell Gutzmer was born January 8, 1948, to Henry and Dorothy (Ercink) Gutzmer in Hennepin County, MN. John attended school in New Effington and was a graduate of the New Effington High School Class of 1967.
On February 2, 1968, John was united in marriage to Carol Broz at the First Lutheran Church in Claire City.
John was employed at the New Effington and Claire City elevators and at Woodland Cabinetry in Sisseton, SD, until retiring in 2012. He also did some butchering on the side with Shorty Wolfe and helped Verne Wolfe with the farming.
John was a volunteer fireman with the Claire City Fire Department and a member of the First Lutheran Church in Claire City. During his retirement, he loved to tinker on lawn mowers in his shop. You could also find him at Cenex in the mornings for coffee discussing the happenings of the day.
Survivors include his mother, Dorothy Gutzmer of Rosholt; three children, Doug (Tammy Johnson) Gutzmer of New Effington, Rhonda Schellberg of Bellingham, MN, and Deanna (Adam Perry) Gutzmer of New Effington; grandchildren, Levi and Kyle Schellberg and Taylor Cloud; and many nieces, nephews, in-laws, and cousins.
John was preceded in death by his father, Henry; sister, Jeannie Gutzmer; uncles, aunts and in-laws.
