Joseph S. Piechowski, age 83, Sisseton, passed away with his family by his side, Wednesday, July 23, 2025, at Coteau des Prairies Hospital with Prairie Lakes Hospice Care.
Funeral Services will be Monday, July 28, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Sisseton with Father Ken Lulf and Deacon Tim Tracy officiating. Music will be provided by Kay Nikolas, Cindy Marohl, and Sandi Jaspers.
Burial will be in the St. Peter's Cemetery, Sisseton. Honorary pallbearers will be Joe's grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Active pallbearers will be Tom Piechowski, Joe Piechowski, Ty Piechowski, Frank Klein, Josh Stack, Jared Kriz, Logan Otto, and Ryan Otto.
Visitation will be Sunday from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. at the Eggers Funeral Home in Rosholt and will continue Monday morning one hour prior to the service at the church.
Joseph Sylvester Piechowski was born to Joe and Florence (Harrington) Piechowski on April 6, 1942, in Sisseton, SD. Joe worked on several farms and had varied jobs until he went to work for the Burlington Northern Railroad. He worked on the railroad for 30 years before retiring in 2003.
Joe married Darlaine Henke Otto on June 7, 1975, at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Sisseton. They were married 45 years before Darlaine's passing in November of 2020. Joe and Darlaine lived in Claire City, then moved to Clear Lake where they enjoyed their retirement together.
It was common to see Joe out on his daily walks from 3-7 miles a day. Joe and Darlaine moved to Rosholt for a few years, then to Edgewood Assisted Living where Joe would still take his walks with his walker in front of him around the area up to a half mile a day.
Joe belonged St. Peter's Catholic Church, where he was an active member of the Knights of Columbus.
Joe leaves to mourn his passing six stepchildren and their partners, Sharon (Russ) McKee, August "Sonny" (Becky) Otto, LaDonna (Randy) Kriz, Dianne Stack (Bob Burhan), William "Billy" (Julie) Otto, and Michelle (Greg) Whitlock; 13 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren; brother Neil Piechowski; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Joe is preceded in death by his wife, Darlaine Piechowski; parents, Joe and Florence Piechowski; two brothers, Stanley and Leo Piechowski; two sisters, Mary Lou Klein and Angie Birchem; and a great-grandson, Devon Stack.
