Jerome G. Nelson, 71, Beardsley, MN, died Saturday, April 14, 2012, at Essentia Health-Holy Trinity Hospital in Graceville, MN.
Funeral services were Wednesday, April 18, at 11:00 a.m. at the Holden Lutheran Church, rural Beardsley, with Minister Bev McNeill officiating. Music was provided by organist Renee Schwagerl and vocalist Courtney DeSplinter.
Burial will be in the Holden Lutheran Cemetery, rural Beardsley. Honorary pallbearers were granddaughters, Theresa Nelson, Katie Nelson, Kimberly Nelson, Brooke DeSplinter, Courtney DeSplinter, Kendra Cox, Chelsea Nelson, and great-granddaughters, Chloe Nelson and Adalynn Sterling. Active pallbearers were grandsons, Nicholas DeSplinter, Jacob Nelson, Levi Nelson, Brandon Nelson, Taylor Cox and Riley Nelson.
Visitation was Wednesday from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the church. The Eggers Funeral Home in Rosholt, SD, was in charge of the arrangements.
Jerome Gilford was born July 30, 1940, in rural Browns Valley, MN, to Gilford and Violet (Arndt) Nelson. He attended school through eighth grade in Foster Township and then worked for area farmers in the Beardsley area.
On June 30, 1962, Jerome married Susie Athey at the Methodist church in Clinton, MN. To this union, four children were born. They farmed south of Beardsley for a year and then moved southeast of Beardsley where they continued to farm and operate a dairy. In 1985, Jerome and Susie moved into Beardsley. Jerome worked on the Fritz LeClair seining crew and also farmed for Lawrence Anderson until 1991. He then worked for Diekmann Farms for 13 years, retiring in 2004.
Jerome enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing, bowling and snowmobiling. He especially loved attending his grandchildren's sporting events.
Survivors include his wife, Susie of Beardsley; four children, Leland (Lori) Nelson of Wheaton, MN, Leon (Sherri) Nelson of New London Spicer, MN, Lenora DeSplinter of Wheaton, and Lucinda Cox of Wheaton; 13 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Steve (Debbie) Nelson of Clinton; two sisters, Mary Jane (Fran) Boothby of Beardsley and Linda (Ron) Teske of Ortonville; and special friend, Mark DeSplinter of Beardsley.
Jerome was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, JoAnn Cardwell.
