Ione Gibson, 73, Beardsley, MN, died Saturday, September 1, 2012, at Abbott-Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis, MN.
Funeral services were Wednesday, September 5, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Beardsley with Rev. Anna Williamson officiating. Music was provided by organist Kathi Tharaldson and vocalists Bjorn Skogquist, Vicki Sager and Patty Anderson.
Burial was in the Beardsley Community Cemetery, Beardsley. Honorary pallbearers were her former classmates at NDSU in the Home Management House; special friends, Carol Johnson, Betty Syverson, Kim Bjerke and Gene Herberg; nephews, Curt Rothi, Paul Johnson, and Carl Paschke. Active pallbearers were nephews, Harold Rothi, Bradley Meyer, Tim Pierce, Don Rosenow, Dave Sager, and Wally Paschke.
Visitation was Tuesday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. followed by a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at the church in Beardsley and continued Wednesday one hour prior to the service at the church.
Ione was born January 26, 1939, in Gardner, ND, to Carl and Mabel (Ostenson) Johnson. She was baptized and confirmed at Nora Lutheran Church in Gardner. She attended rural school through the eighth grade and graduated from Hendrum High School in 1956. Ione then attended NDSU graduating with a degree in home economics in 1960. She started teaching in Beardsley that fall.
On July 6, 1963, Ione married Harold "Butch" Gibson at Nora Lutheran Church in Gardner. After their marriage, she continued to live and teach in Beardsley. She retired in 1984.
Ione was active as a FHA advisor, 4-H leader, lifetime member of MAVA, Midwest Dairy Council and the United Methodist Women's group where she served as treasurer. Ione enjoyed sewing and cooking. She was known for her caramel rolls and muffins. Everyone who learned to cook from Ione knew you only stirred the muffins 18 times! Ione was very proud of her Norwegian heritage, often wearing a Norwegian sweater. She also loved music, and following the NDSU Bison, Minnesota Twins and Minnesota Vikings. Ione smiled through everything!
Survivors include her husband, Butch of Beardsley; daughter, Dawn (John) Carlson of Kirkland, IL; son, Darin (Dawn) Gibson of Beardsley; six grandchildren, Maison, Kaitlyn, Morgan, Emma, Mataya, and Lars; sister, Caye (Tom) Pierce of Sun Prairie, WI; brother, Donald Johnson of Live Oak, TX; three sisters-in-law, Doris (Jim) Boos of Ramsey, MN, Betty (Arnie) Meyer of Rogers, MN, and Anna (John) Rothi of Ortonville, MN; and many nieces and nephews.
Ione was preceded in death by her parents; an infant brother, Roger; and in-laws, Harold and Hazel Gibson.
