Howard G. Nelson, 93, New Effington, SD, passed away Tuesday, October 20, 2015, at the Northeast Care and Rehabilitation Center in Rosholt.
Funeral services were Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church in New Effington with Pastor Cheryl Rondeau-Bassett officiating. Music was provided by organist Debra Bredvik and vocalist Judy Johnson.
Burial was in the Garden of Rest Cemetery, New Effington. Military honors were provided by the Read Veflin American Legion Post 180 of New Effington. Pallbearers were Bob Schultz, Delas Schultz, Mike Gable, Tim Nelson, Jeff Steffens, Chad Broz, Jim Miller and David Nelson.
Visitation was Friday from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. followed by a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at the Eggers Funeral Home in Rosholt. Visitation continued Saturday one hour prior to the service at the church.
Howard George Nelson was born July 5, 1922, to Nencel and Elizabeth (Matteson) Nelson in White Rock Township, rural Rosholt, SD. He attended school in rural Rosholt and graduated from Rosholt High School in 1941. After finishing school, Howard worked at a defense plant in California for a year. He then returned to South Dakota where he worked on a farm in the Rosholt area.
On September 26, 1944, Howard married Doris Schultz in Brandvold Church, Victor, SD. Howard was drafted into the U.S. Marine Corps on April 28, 1945, and was honorably discharged August 1, 1946. After returning home, Howard farmed until 1983. He then worked as a carpenter helping family remodel their houses, building doll houses for grandchildren, and volunteering his talents at the church and museum.
Howard was a member of the Read Veflin American Legion Post 180 of New Effington for 71 years. He also belonged to Faith Lutheran Church, and was a member of the church council for many years.
In his spare time, Howard enjoyed bowling, gardening, yardwork, and going to coffee with friends in New Effington.
Survivors include his wife, Doris of 71 years; daughter, Marilyn Nelson of Minneapolis, MN; son, Larry (Linda) Nelson of Eugene, OR; three grandchildren, Stacy (Rob) Lusk of Pocatello, ID, Kaylynn (Todd) Olney of Eugene, OR, and Scott (Stephanie) Nelson of Buckeye, AZ; six great-grandchildren, Miah and Abby Lusk, Cooper and Devan Olney and Cohen and Piper Nelson; two sisters, Ellen Wold and Cleone Gable both of New London, MN; a brother, Harvey (Emogene) Nelson of Hudson, WI; a sister-in-law Joanne Nelson of Belgrade, MN; and several nieces and nephews.
Howard was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Delmar, Russell and Claude.
