Herbran C. "Herb" Read, 81, Fargo, ND, passed away Saturday, September 6, 2014, at Sanford Palliative Care in Fargo.
Funeral services were Wednesday, September 10, at 10:30 a.m. at Hickson Lutheran Church in Hickson, ND, with Rev. Kathryn Zurcher officiating. Music was provided by pianist Nora Hyde and vocalist Mark Torneten.
Visitation was one hour prior to the service at the church.
Burial was in the Brandvold Cemetery, rural Victor, SD. Pallbearers were Lynn Riveland, David Skog, Brad Eggers, Aaron Haberl, Brendon Haberl, and Landon Torneten.
Herbran Clayton Read, Jr., the only child of Lillian (Bisek) Read and Herbran Clayton Read, Sr., was born in the family farm home near New Effington, SD, on September 22, 1932. He was baptized as an infant at Brandvold Lutheran Church near Victor, SD, and confirmed there in 1946.
Herb attended rural school for eight years in Lien Township in northeast South Dakota and graduated from the Morris, MN, "Ag" school in 1956. In 1958, Herb earned a degree in drafting and estimating from NDSSS in Wahpeton, ND, and was also the editor and illustrator of his yearbook, The Agawasie.
Herb's first job was as a draftsman for the John Deere Corporation in Moline, IL.
On June 12, 1960, Herbran married Lorraine Aden at Bethania Lutheran Church in Rosholt, SD. They moved to Fargo, ND, where he worked temporary jobs before becoming a draftsman for Mid-America Steel, a position he held for 32 years, retiring in 1998.
Herb was a member of Hickson Lutheran Church for over 40 years. He also served as an assistant Boy Scout leader and was a member of the Agassiz Rock Club and the Model A Club.
Herb's interests included deer hunting, camping, fishing, gardening, and taxidermy. He also enjoyed wood working, bird watching, and listening to blue grass music. Herb's favorite projects were the restoration of his dad's 1950 John Deere tractor and working on restoring his first car, a 1931 Model A Ford. His family will finish the restoration project as a final tribute to their father.
Mourning his passing are his wife, Lorraine of Fargo; children, Pamela (Kent) Haberl of Dupo, IL, Elisabeth (Mark) Torneten of Council Bluffs, IA, and Thomas (Minnette) Read of Lolo, MT; grandchildren, Aaron Haberl, Brendon Haberl, Landon Torneten, Ashlyn Torneten, and Emma Read. Other survivors include Read and Bisek cousins; sister-in-law, Elaine (Aden) Bapp of Rosholt, SD; and brother-in-law, Duane (Connie) Aden of Marshall, MN.
Preceding Herb in death were his daughter, Kristi; his parents, Herbran Sr., and Lillian; his wife's parents, Eitel and Louise Aden; sister-in-law, Ellen Aden; brother-in-law, Stan Bapp; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
