Henrietta Catherine was born in rural Humphrey, NE, the eldest of eight children, to Henry and Mary (Kraus) Braun on January 7, 1919. She was baptized into the Roman Catholic faith when she was three hours old by Rev. Lawrence Pauly, OMI, with sponsors Henry Kraus and Catherine Braun.
At age one, she and her parents traveled via railroad with their household furnishings, livestock and farm machinery to the village of White Rock, SD. Henry had acquired acreage in White Rock Township of Roberts County; living quarters were at the site. Later a larger house (in the 1930s) was moved to the farm from White Rock. Tim and Cheryl Braun now have residence there.
Mother attended Moreland School, a white, wood frame country school, with her siblings and the Lick, Wieser, Hjalmer, McShane and Cottingham children of neighboring families.
Mother met William P. Klein at a barn dance. They were married October 1, 1941, at St. John the Baptist Church, Rosholt, SD, moving to a farmstead in Victor Township. During their 27 years of marriage, Dad was the breadwinner for the family with eight children, farming after the Depression, Dust Bowl era, bombing of Pearl Harbor and ensuing World War II years. Mother managed the household and shaped our lives with the demands of farm life and a large garden and fruit orchard. Chickens, eggs and cream for spending money became a necessity. There's still the aroma of freshly baked bread that lingers.
Their children's country school events, church activities and Sunday dinner guests filled their days.
Daddy died November 26, 1968.
Leaving the farm in 1972, she moved to a home in Rosholt, later an apartment and to the Countryside Inn in Rosholt. Daily Mass, Rosary Makers, quilting at Bethania, Senior Citizens, puzzle building, and family events as our families grew was her life. Mother enjoyed travel, especially to Europe, Rome and the Vatican.
Henrietta is survived by her children, Mary Jane (Neil) Fritz, William (Barbara) Klein, Elroy (Patsy) Klein, Arnold Klein, Donna (Dale) Peterson, Constance (Arthur) Brandenburger, Margory Hoyt, and Dolores (Arnold) Anderson; 28 grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; brothers, Gilbert Braun and Donald (Anna Mae) Braun; sister, Marietta Bullis; sisters-in-law, Gladys Braun, Margaret Braun, Gweneth Klein, and Mary Klein.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William; son-in-law, Arthur Hoyt; daughter-in-law, Roxanne Klein; granddaughter, Pauline (Peterson) Theisen; grandson, Blain Brandenburger; and brothers, Edwin, Richard, Delmar, and Maurice.
Mother's humility, modesty, quiet patience, her selflessness, devotion to her faith, her family in beauty and grace has always been inspiring.
