Helen Marie was born the first of nine children to Emil and Pauline (Determan) Hedrick on October 22, 1922, in Becker Township, Roberts County, SD. She attended rural school and graduated from Browns Valley High School in 1940.
Helen fell in love with the boy next door, Wm. S. Peterson, whom she married on April 12, 1942, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Browns Valley. They continued to farm while they raised their eight children. Helen worked at Ike's in the late 50s until 1967 when she was employed as secretary at the Browns Valley School. She retired in 1989. Helen and Bill moved into Browns Valley in the early 80s.
After retirement the couple traveled to all the states west of the Mississippi, and Wisconsin and Michigan. They also ventured to Canada, Mexico, and Alaska. They enjoyed traveling to various national parks including Yellowstone, Glacier, Yosemite, and the Grand Canyon. Bill passed away July 7, 2004.
Helen also traveled to the Bahamas for a Daughters of Isabella convention, and to Branson, Missouri with Dick and Patty Blegen and Mildred Johnson.
