Helen Bernice Homan

Helen B. Homan, 97, Beardsley, MN, passed away peacefully with her family at her side Friday, January 17, 2020 at Grace Home in Graceville, MN.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday, January 23, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Browns Valley with Father David Breu officiating. Music will be provided by organist Carmen Hills and vocalists Sue Sykora and Stacey Borgheiinck.

Burial will be in the St. Mary's Cemetery, Beardsley. Honorary pallbearers will be Helen's granddaughters. Active pallbearers will be Helen's grandsons.

Visitation will be Wednesday, January 22 ^nd , from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. followed by a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. at St. Mary's Community Hall in Beardsley. Visitation will be continued one hour prior to the funeral at St. Anthony's Church.

Helen Bernice (Spindler) Homan was born November 2, 1922, in Browns Valley to Albert and Dena (Lubbers) Spindler. She received the sacraments of Baptism, 1 ^st Communion, and Confirmation at St. Anthony's. Helen grew up on a farm near Browns Valley with her five siblings. She attended school at District #3 in a little one room schoolhouse in Traverse County. Helen graduated from Browns Valley High School in 1941.

Following graduation, Helen worked at Union State Bank until 1946. It was while drinking a bottle of Orange Crush at a dance in Browns Valley Helen met the "Love of her life," Anton (Tony) Homan. Their love remained and grew even while Tony was serving our Country overseas. During Tony's Leave, they were united in marriage on March 24, 1945. Tony returned home and the couple resided on a farm north of Beardsley, where they milked cows and farmed. During this time, they were blessed with five children.

Helen resumed her job at the bank from 1961-1974. Although she was proud of working up to assistant cashier, her children will tell you her main career was being a mother. After her "One and only" (Tony) passed away in 1983, Helen remained on the farm downsizing into a mobile home where she lived until 2013. In January 2013, Helen moved into Grace Village Assisted Living until April 2019. The residents became like family, always enjoying their afternoon coffee hour. Helen then moved into Grace Home in Graceville until the time of her death

Serving her Church her entire life, Helen was awarded the Bishop's Medal of Service at St. Mary's Church on March 15, 1997. She was also a member of Daughters of Isabella, Christian Mothers, and American Legion Auxiliary.

Helen would serve a meal or lunch to whoever would come knocking on the door. Family favorites included caramel rolls, apple pie, homemade bread, sweet rice, and seven layer bars. She never missed an opportunity to socialize; enjoying casino outings, following her children's band (Country Sunshine), several Rustad bus tour trips, and attending her grandchildren's many events.

Helen lived a simple life filled with love and commitment to her Catholic faith and family. Her daily devotion of the Rosary on EWTN TV was an important part of each day, along with special prayers for her family and friends. Helen had a good heart, a strong faith, and a generous soul.

Preceding Helen in death was her husband, Tony Homan; parents, Albert and Dena Spindler; in-laws, Charles and Cecilia Homan; son, Kevin Homan; siblings, Gerhard (Katherine) Spindler, William (Kathleen) Spindler, and Raymond (Helen) Spindler; sister-in-law, Helen (Mrs. Harold) Spindler; sister, Ethel Silbaugh; and infant twin sisters, Elizabeth and Gertrude.

Left to cherish her memory include her children: Charles (Joan) Homan of Wheaton, Edward (Twila) Homan of Beardsley, Patrick (Cindy) Homan of Beardsley, Darlene (Wayne) Anderson of Graceville, and Sandy Homan of Beardsley; grandchildren: Kris (Kelli) Anderson, Suzy (Kris) Alberts, Ben (Trisha) Anderson, Missy (Troy) Thissen, Jenny (Daniel) Lundquist, Ricky (Jackie) Homan, Randy (Rebecca) Homan, Nikki (Kyle) Boike, Becky (Dan) Andrews, Sarah (Brad) Rudolph, Casey (Jenny) Homan, Amanda (Brian) Bruinsma, Chantal (Travis) Ninneman, Anthony (Nicole) Homan, Lance Homan (special friend Kelsi), Ryan Homan, Laura Homan (special friend Ryan), and Tyler Homan. Helen is also survived by 36 precious great-grandchildren; A brother, Harold Spindler of Monticello; A brother-in-law, Jerry Silbaugh of Plymouth; and many nieces and nephews.
