Hazel was born on March 10, 1917, to Henry and Lesa (Stowe) Meyer in the family's farm house in East Harmon Township, south of Rosholt, SD. As a child, she moved with her parents to Rosholt, where she lived and attended school. Hazel graduated from Rosholt High School in 1935 and attended the Teachers College in Moorhead, Minnesota, for two years. Completing her teaching program in 1937, Hazel returned to her home in Rosholt and taught in several rural schools around Rosholt.

In 1941, Hazel married Ralph Schumacher, and the two moved back to the farm where Hazel had been born. Hazel and Ralph had one son, Bruce, in 1949. The love of her life, Ralph, passed away in 1979, and she continued to live in her childhood home until 2004 when she moved to a house in Rosholt. She lived on her own until 2011, when she moved to the assisted living center in Rosholt where she peacefully left this life with her son at her side.

Hazel had quit teaching to be a farm wife, but in 1954, she returned to the profession and taught first grade in Rosholt Elementary School until her retirement in 1983. Like many teachers of that era, Hazel took college courses to complete her degree, and she graduated with a BA in education in 1968. During her years of teaching, Hazel touched the lives of hundreds of children and used to joke that she had zipped the zippers of most of the men she saw on the streets of Rosholt. She loved her work and was a master of her craft. Over the years, many people have recognized her with grateful comments. Hazel's contribution to the community was publicly recognized when she received the Rosholt Alumna of the Year Award in 2010.

Hazel had many interests. She read voraciously on a variety of subjects, and she enjoyed traveling during her retirement years. She was active in church activities and participated in quilting until stiffening hands made that too difficult. During her many years on her beloved farm home, Hazel gardened with zest. She raised vegetables and maintained a variety of flowers; she was particularly fond of her roses. Caring for her home was one of her greatest passions. However, her favorite time was any time spent with her four grandchildren, and she had a powerful and wonderful influence on their lives. All of them spent many days at "Grandma's house" as children and will treasure forever the hours of instruction (and indulgence) they received from her. Nothing gave her greater pleasure than spending time in their company, and—as time passed—she was able to spend time with her great-grandchildren, something she enjoyed greatly.

Hazel lived a life free from illness and passed from this life with grace and peace. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Ralph. She is survived by her son Bruce and much beloved daughter-in-law Janis who reside in Fairmount, ND; by four grandchildren: Jana (Tony) Mallberg of Big Lake, MN, Adam Schumacher of Sioux Falls, SD, Jordan (Gina) Schumacher of Fargo, ND, and Brooke (Randy) Schumacher-Massey of Vancouver, WA; as well as ten great-grandchildren.

Hazel lived life well and made a difference in her world. She will be remembered with love and respect, and she will be missed.
