Harold E. Haaland, 88, Rosholt, SD, formerly of Veblen, SD, died Thursday, April 19, 2012, at Essentia Health in Fargo, ND.
Funeral services were Monday, April 23, 2012, at 10:00 a.m. at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Veblen, SD, with Rev. Tryphine Olson Schruba officiating. Organist was Karen Hornseth and vocalists were the Ole Olson Trio.
Burial was in the Palestine Cemetery, rural Veblen, SD. Pallbearers were Tim Haaland, Neal Haaland, Terry Haaland, Wayne Haaland, Curtis Haaland, Ronald Haaland, Rodney Frederickson and Scott Savage.
Visitation was Sunday from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the church with a prayer service following at 7:00 p.m. Visitation continued Monday one hour prior to the service at the church.
Harold Ervin was born August 25, 1923, in rural Lidgerwood, ND, in a homestead shack to Tollef and Inga (Hemmingson) Haaland. He attended rural school by Bergen Church for four years and completed school through the eighth grade at Woodlake School near Cayuga, ND.
On December 31, 1945, Harold married Arlene Christopherson at the church parsonage in Veblen, SD. They resided on the Haaland homestead near Veblen where they farmed and raised cattle. Harold had a portable feed grinder and ground feed for area farmers. In 1979, they moved to Veblen where they lived for several years. Harold worked part time for the Marshall County Weed Board and continued to work on the family farm. They bought a small farm near the homestead where they lived until November of 2010 when they moved to Rosholt.
Harold served on the Cenex Board, ASCS Board, Veblen school board and was a member of the church council for both Palestine and Our Savior's Lutheran Church. He loved to play cards, square dance and tell stories about the old days.
Harold is survived by his wife of 66 years, Arlene of Rosholt; five children, Dennis (Betty) Haaland of Maple Grove, MN, Myrna Haaland (Jack Huber) of Deerwood, MN, Dayle (Ruth) Haaland of Veblen, Darrell (Sharon) Haaland of Sisseton, SD, and Marcine (Marc) Evan of Andover, MN; seven grandchildren; Cheri Haaland of Maple Grove, MN, Nathan (Jeanie) Haaland of Fargo, ND, Randy (Roberta) Haaland of Fargo, Eric (fiancée Anne Rosenbaum) Haaland of Buffalo, NY, Katie (Jesse) Gauthier of Sioux Falls, SD, Marc (fiancée Sara Skogerboe) Evan of Burnsville, MN, and Emily Evan of Andover, MN; four great-grandchildren, Morgan, Tyler, Tyrson and Leighton; and one sister Beverly (Andy) Savage of Bloomington, MN.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Milford Haaland; grandson, Aaron Haaland; and a daughter-in-law, Sue Haaland.
