Harlan Peterson

Harlan Joseph Peterson, 75, Browns Valley, MN, died Tuesday, September 13, 2011, at Sanford USD Medical Center, Sioux Falls, SD.
Funeral services were Friday, September 16, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Browns Valley with Father David Breu officiating. Music was provided by organist Norma Jung and the St. Anthony's Choir.
Burial was in the  Calvary Cemetery, Browns Valley. Honorary pallbearers were Jim, Eddie, and Steve Lamers. Active pallbearers were granddaughters, Tessa and Emma Bauer.
Visitation was Thursday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. followed by a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at the church. Visitation continued Friday one hour prior to the service at the church.
Harlan Joseph was born March 4, 1936, in Sisseton, SD, to Michael and Laura (Lenssen) Peterson. He grew up on a farm outside of Browns Valley and attended school in Browns Valley.
On May 5, 1958, Harlan married Frances "Stub" Thuringer at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Sisseton. After their marriage, they made their home in Sisseton. Harlan worked for over 25 years in highway construction and was highly regarded for his skill as a finish grader. In 1981, they moved to Browns Valley. For the next 30 years, Harlan farmed north of Browns Valley.
In his semi-retirement, Harlan developed a special interest in researching fine antique Winchester firearms. Harlan lived a gentle life with hard work, good humor, and care for his family and neighbors. He stood tall, strong, and proud in every way.
Survivors include his wife, Frances "Stub" Peterson of Browns Valley; three children, Julianne (Christopher) Bauer of Yankton, SD, James Peterson of Sisseton, and Nancy (Brad Raw) Peterson of Browns Valley; two grandchildren, Tessanna and Emmalynn Bauer; and a brother, Walter (Jane) Peterson of Minneapolis, MN.
Harlan was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son; and four brothers, Harvey, Harley, Harold, and David.
