Gilbert William Braun, 93, Rosholt, SD died peacefully on Thursday, July 4, 2019 at Countryside Inn Assisted Living in Rosholt.
Funeral mass will be Tuesday, July 9, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. at St. John's Catholic Church in Rosholt with Fr. Gregg Frankman officiating. Organ music will be provided by Lana Sand. Special music will be provided by Marlee Dunn and Vanessa Hogg.
Burial will be in the St. Nicholas Cemetery, rural Rosholt. Pallbearers will be Gilbert's sons ~ Kevin, Gary, Duane, Paul, Lyle and Leon. Gift carriers will be Gilbert's daughters, Debra, Linda and Carol.
Visitation will be Monday from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. at the Eggers Funeral Home in Rosholt followed by a prayer service at 7:00 at the church. Visitation will continue Tuesday one hour prior to the funeral mass at the church.
Gilbert was born to Henry and Mary (Kraus) Braun on July 7, 1925 in White Rock Township, SD. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Nicholas Catholic Church, Rosholt. He attended Moreland country school through the 8th grade and then helped on the family farm.
On September 2, 1953, Gilbert married Marcella Klein at St. Philip's Catholic Church in Hankinson, ND. They bought a farm nine miles northeast of Rosholt where they farmed for about 40 years. They continued to live on the farm after retiring.
Gilbert was a gentle, quiet man of profound faith. He enjoyed family celebrations, helping his children with their 4-H projects, time with his grandchildren, watching Twins ballgames on TV, and polka dancing. He had a special talent for designing and building a wide variety of items, including toys for the children, farm equipment, cabinets and other items for St. John's Catholic Church, the "people hauler" for community celebrations, and even a rowboat. He was on the parish council at St. John's Catholic Church and was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters. He also served on the boards of the Rosholt Elevator and White Rock Township. After retirement, Gilbert enjoyed bus tours with Marcella, bowling and golfing.
Gilbert is survived by children Kevin (Kay), Gary (Lisa), Debra, Linda (Gary) Ostby, Duane (Maureen), Carol (Deb), Paul, Lyle (Jackie), and Leon, ten grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, five step great-grandchildren, brother Donald (Anna Mae), sister Marietta and sisters-in-law Gladys Braun, Margaret Braun, Lavon Klein and Edith Klein, and many other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his wife Marcella, infant daughter Mary, parents Henry and Mary, sister Henrietta, and brothers Edwin, Richard, Delmar and Maurice.
