Frances JoAnn "Stub" Thuringer Peterson, 77, passed away September 12, 2012 in her home after a courageous four-year battle with cancer and its after effects.
Funeral services were Saturday, September 15, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Browns Valley, MN, with Father David Breu officiating.
Burial was in the Calvary Cemetery. Urn bearers were her granddaughters, Tessa and Emma Bauer and nephew, Brody Rauchwarter.
Visitation was Friday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. followed by a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at the church. Visitation continued Saturday one hour prior to the service at the church.
Frances "Stub" was born March 7, 1935 in Eden, South Dakota to Valentine and Florence (Schlekeway) Thuringer. She grew up on a farm on the shore of Clear Lake and graduated from Sisseton High School in 1953.
On May 5, 1958, Frances married Harlan Peterson at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Sisseton. After their marriage, they made their home in Sisseton. Frances worked for many years at Hull's Super Value. She then spent 10 years as the women and children's apparel and dry goods department manager for Stavig's Department Store. She also sewed for a number of years for Dakotah Industries. Frances was a member and president of the St. Peter's Altar Society. In 1981, Harlan and Stub moved to Browns Valley, Minnesota where they farmed.
Stub was a seamstress of great skill. An avid reader, she was a past member of the Browns Valley Public Library Board. Family-famous for her fried chicken and Long John doughnuts, Stub was also an excellent vegetable and raspberry gardener and canner. Widely renowned by small children as a pushover, she was a small package of boundless energy.
Survivors include three children, Julianne (Christopher) Bauer of Yankton, SD, James Peterson of Sisseton, and Nancy (Brad Raw) of Browns Valley, two grandchildren, Tessanna and Emmalynn Bauer, three brothers, Jim (Rose) Thuringer, Sioux Falls, SD, Jack (Carole) Thuringer, Sioux Falls, SD, and Tom (Cecie) Rauchwarter, Long Lake, MN, and two sisters, Joyce (Tom) Meaney, Peosta, IA and Peggy Rauchwarter, Browns Valley, MN.
Frances was preceded in death by her husband, parents, an infant son, brother, Donald Thuringer, and sister, Norma Thuringer.
