Eugene J. Bostrom

Eugene J. Bostrom, 79, New Effington, SD, died Tuesday, August 6, 2019, at the Coteau des Prairies Hospital in Sisseton, SD.

Funeral services will be Friday, August 9, at 10:00 a.m. at Faith Lutheran Church in New Effington with Rev. Cheryl Rondeau-Bassett officiating.  Music will be provided by organist Deb Bredvik.

Burial will be in the Garden of Rest Cemetery, New Effington.  Honorary pallbearers will be Gene's grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  Active pallbearers will be Tim Leverson, Brian Leverson, Mike Ceroll, Adrian Kemnitz, Chad Krueger, and Mark Meyer.

Visitation will be Thursday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Eggers Funeral Home in Rosholt and will continue Friday one hour prior to the service at the church.

Eugene James Bostrom was born July 6, 1940, to Earl and Junette (Schultz) Bostrom in Sisseton, SD.  He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Bethany Lutheran in New Effington.  Gene attended school at Old Effington through the eighth grade.  After finishing school, he worked on the family farm.

On October 30, 1960, Gene married Shirley Leverson at the Nidaros Lutheran Church in Hammer, SD. After their marriage, they farmed in rural New Effington.  Gene also owned and operated Bostrom Construction.  He later worked at the Roberts County Highway Department.  In 1995, Gene and Shirley moved into New Effington.  Gene retired in 1997.

Gene was a member of Faith Lutheran Church.  His hobbies included gardening, bird watching and making Christmas cookies.  He also enjoyed woodworking and remodeling houses. With his witty humor and wise cracks, Gene was the foreman of every project the family ever did.  Above all, he loved spending time with his grandkids and great-granddaughters.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley of New Effington; children, Scott (Julie) Bostrom of New Effington, Lori Schiltz of Grand Forks, ND, Steve (Cindy) Bostrom of New Effington, Kristi (Dave) Schneidermann of Ulen, MN, and Randy (Christy) Bostrom of New Effington; grandchildren, Kallyn (Travis) Peterson, Kaden and Karah Bostrom, DeAnn and Katie Schiltz, Sarah, Megan and Carl Bostrom, Zach and Allie Schneidermann, and Brady and Bryce Bostrom; great-granddaughters, Avery, Emily and Madison; brothers and sisters, Emil (Donna) Bostrom of Farmington, MN, Janet Ceroll of New Effington, Mavis Meyer of South St. Paul, MN, Linda Kemnitz of Rosholt, Keith (ReNae) Bostrom of New Effington, Darlene (Jerold) Krueger of New Effington, Dianne (Lenny) Kindem of Roberts, WI, Paul (Brenda) Bostrom of New Effington, and Bonnie (Mike) Sebek of Claire City, SD.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Junette; brothers-in-law, Marvin Ceroll, Ronnie Ceroll, Arvin Kemnitz, and Arlen Meyer; and parents-in-law, Gordon and Dorothy Leverson.
