Ethel Weinkauf, 92, New Effington, SD, died Friday, November 5, 2010, at the Rosholt Care Center in Rosholt, SD.
Funeral services were Monday, November 8, at 3:00 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church in New Effington with Rev. Harold Watrous officiating. Music was provided by organist Debra Bredvik and vocalists Paul and Diane Bartnick.
Burial was in the Garden of Rest Cemetery, rural New Effington. Honorary pallbearers were the staff of the Rosholt Care Center. Active pallbearers were Jared Bartnick, Steve Schrader, Curtis Gollnick, Galen Weinkauf, Bob Karst, and Guy Mackner.
Visitation was Sunday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. followed by a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at the Eggers Funeral Home in Rosholt. Visitation continued Monday one hour prior to the service at the church.
Ethel Wilhelmina Gollnick was born September 26, 1918, in Greendale Township, near Hankinson, ND, the youngest daughter of Max and Wilhelmina (Heesch) Gollnick. She was baptized and confirmed at the Emmanuel Evangelical Church in Hankinson. Ethel attended grade school in Greendale Township and high school in Hankinson graduating in 1936. After graduation, she spent a couple of years at home caring for her ill mother. She married Palmer Stave and they had a daughter, Patsy, and a son, Ronald, who was stillborn.
During the War years, Ethel worked at the hospital in Bend, OR, and the White Cross Drug Store in Brawley, CA. They returned to Hankinson and Ethel was employed at the Kent Hospital, Dosch's Café and Haukness Store.
On August 11, 1950, Ethel married Norbert Weinkauf at the Evangelical and Reformed Church in Hankinson. They had a daughter, Jody. They farmed in the New Effington area, purchasing their own farm in1969. They retired in 1988, and Norbert and Ethel moved into New Effington in 1996. In 2004, they made their home in the Rosholt Care Center. Norbert passed away April 19, 2006.
Ethel was a member of the Emmanuel Evangelical Church, now known as the United Church of Christ, in Hankinson where she belonged to the Ladies Guild serving as president and program leader. She was later a member of Faith Lutheran Church in New Effington. She also belonged to the Read-Veflin American Legion Auxiliary and the VFW Post 3342 Auxiliary. Ethel enjoyed flowers and gardening.
Survivors include two daughters, Patsy Schmechel of Breckenridge, MN, Jody (Jeff) Bartnick of New Effington; five grandchildren, Steve (Dana) Schrader, Lucinda Schrader, Jennifer (Jessie) Hendrickson, Jill (Zach) Errett, and Jared Bartnick; two step grandchildren, Bruce Schmechel and Lorraine Rice; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Ethel was preceded in death by an infant son, Ronald; a son-in-law, Bennie Schmechel; three brothers, Eddie, Rudolph, and Clarence Gollnick; and three sisters, Lyla Medenwald, Florence Clouse, and infant sister Alma.
