Elaine Broz

Elaine J. Broz, 72, New Effington, SD, passed away Thursday, March 16, 2017, in her home.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, March 22, 2017, at 10:30 a.m. at Faith Lutheran Church in New Effington with Rev. Cheryl Rondeau-Bassett officiating. Music will be provided by organists Peggy Talsness and Jodi Hartmann and vocalist Kara Lee Hansen.

Burial will be in the Garden of Rest Cemetery, New Effington. Honorary pallbearers will be great-grandsons, Dominik Ostby, Braxtyn Ostby, and Baby Ostby, along with special granddogs Max and Cash. Active pallbearers will be her grandchildren, Jeremy Ostby, Justin Ostby, Taylor Ebben, Shayna Ebben, Sydney Ebben and Brayden Ebben.

Visitation will be Tuesday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. followed by a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at the church. Visitation will continue Wednesday one hour prior to the service at the church. The Eggers Funeral Home in Rosholt, SD, is in charge of the arrangements.

Elaine Joyce was born April 21, 1944, in Hankinson, ND, to Nils and June (Schultz) Petterson. She was baptized and confirmed at Brandvold Lutheran Church, Victor, SD. She attended school in New Effington, graduating from New Effington High School in 1962.

On September 9, 1961, Elaine married Clinton "Knute" Broz at Brandvold Lutheran Church, Victor. They were blessed with three children: Claudette, Michelle and Chad. Elaine worked for the U.S. Postal Service and became the postmaster in Rosholt, SD, in 1987. After 36 years of service, she retired in 2006. Knute passed away January 21, 1993.

Elaine was very active in her church where she served on the altar committee and the church council as well as teaching Sunday school and confirmation. She enjoyed reading, quilting, puzzles, and was an excellent cook.  She also traveled extensively with her sister Jean. Above all, Elaine loved going to her grandchildren's many activities.

Survivors include her children, Claudette (Dale) Ostby of New Effington, Michelle (John) Ebben of Wilmot, SD, and Chad (Sara) Broz of New Effington; grandchildren, Jeremy (Courtney) Ostby, Justin (Amanda) Ostby, Taylor Ebben, Shayna Ebben, Sydney Ebben and Brayden Ebben; great-grandsons, Dominik Ostby, Braxtyn Ostby, and Baby Ostby; sister, Judy Johnson of Belle Fourche, SD; brothers-in-law, Jerry (Geraldine) Broz of Breckenridge, MN, and Clyde Broz of New Effington; sisters-in-law, Joyce Christopherson of Watertown, SD, and Carol Gutzmer of New Effington; aunt, Doris Nelson of New Effington; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Elaine was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Knute; sister, Jean; mother and father-in-law, Clifford and Judith Broz; and brothers-in-law, Jerry Johnson, Carmen Broz, Rick Christopherson and John Gutzmer.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Faith Quilters, the New Effington Fire Department, the Country Tractor Run, or Wilmot Lutheran Sunday School.
