A celebration of her life will be held on Monday, October 28th, at 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Presbyterian Church in Browns Valley, Minnesota, with visitation one hour before the service. The Lay Leader will be family friend Stephanie Warren. Music will be provided by Ginny Westbrock and Todd Johnson.
Pallbearers will be her grandchildren—Stephanie Goodsell Beck, Mandy Goodsell, Casey Goodsell, Whitney (Nigg) Moore, Louis Nigg, and Amanda (O'Leary) Nigg. Edith will be laid to rest beside her husband, Dale Nigg, and son, Lynn Nigg, at Valley View Cemetery in Browns Valley, Minnesota.
Edith was born March 17, 1926, to Gunval and Maria (Krause) Halseide in One Road Township, "up in the hills" West of Peever, SD. She grew up with six siblings: Elna Nigg, Nita Skogen, Marguerite Lyngen, Stanley Halseide, Curtis Halseide, and Beverly Halseide.
On November 27th, 1948, Edith married Dale Leland Nigg. They made their home on the family farm, initially living with her in-laws Louie and Gladys (Johnson) Nigg. Edith was a dedicated mother to Mary, Lynn, and Marilynn, a loving wife and homemaker. Though her talents were many, she especially excelled as a cook and baker—her chocolate chip cookies were legendary. When Mary and Lynn came home from school, she always had a fresh, homemade treat waiting for them—bread, donuts, and long johns were among their favorites. During family gatherings, she delighted everyone with her warm hospitality, and she was known as the "Queen of spoiling all of us."
Her family cherished Edith for her incredible patience, warmth, and thoughtfulness. She had a knack for making everyone feel welcome. Famous for her chocolate chip cookies, they were always available—whether she was home or not, she made sure everyone knew to help themselves. "'Come in and grab a few,' she'd say," a sentiment that reflects her welcoming spirit.
She sang as she baked, rarely stayed still, and was Dale's favorite dance partner. Edith loved her family wholeheartedly and cherished the many friendships she made over the years, especially with her beloved "Peever People."
Edith is survived by her daughters, Mary (Don) Carlson and Marilynn (Les) Goodsell, and her daughter-in-law, Jeanne Nigg. Her grandchildren—Stephanie Goodsell Beck, Mandy Goodsell, Casey Goodsell, Louis (Amanda) Nigg, and Whitney (Hardell) Moore—along with her great-grandchildren, Tyler Beck, Grace Polite, Kelvin Polite, Lydia Polite, Jon Nigg, Bo Nigg, Maddox Moore, and Emory Moore, will carry on her legacy.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dale; son, Lynn; parents; sisters and brothers; and many beloved brothers- and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
Edith's warmth, generosity, and love will be remembered by those fortunate enough to know her.
