Dorothy was born February 5, 1932, on a farm near Hammer, SD, to Ole and Alma Olson. She grew up in the Hammer and New Effington area, graduating from high school in New Effington.
On November 18, 1951, Dorothy married her high school sweetheart, Thorvald Bredvik, at Zion Lutheran Church in New Effington. Their 63-year union brought much love and three children, Denise, Lynn and Damaris.
Through the years, Dorothy farmed alongside Thorvald working in the fields. After retiring from field work, she continued to drive about looking at crops and watching things grow and spending time with her grandchildren. Later in life, Dorothy found a new passion for playing poker. She was well known as the "Poker Lady." One of her most treasured stories was sharing that in 2004 she won a seat to the World Series of Poker. She described it as one of the best times of her life.
Dorothy is survived by her children, Denise (Ken) Lingen, Lynn (Debbie) Bredvik and Damaris Miller; six grandchildren, Carl (Steph) Lingen, Kipp (Katie) Bredvik, Kay Bredvik, Kelly (Travis) Kohoutek, Hayley (Kailyn) Ohm, and Tore Miller; five great-grandchildren, Isabella Lingen, Jase, Grant and Lane Kohoutek, and Tripp Bredvik; sisters, Mavis Thoreson, Verda Urevig, Oletta Sanden, Nyla Olson, and Greta Leen; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Thorvald on May 12, 2015; parents, Ole and Alma; and an infant brother, Thomas.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the New Effington Community Cemetery or the New Effington Community Center.
