Delbert L. Wiegman, 90, Graceville, MN, died Friday, April 1, 2011, at the Minnesota Veterans Home in Fergus Falls, MN.
Funeral mass were Monday, April 4, at 11:00 a.m. at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Graceville with Father David Breu officiating. Music was provided by organist Deb Farwell and vocalists Phyllis and Rollie Bauer and Doris Taffe.
Burial was in the Graceville Consolidated Cemetery, Graceville, MN. Military honors were provided by the Jesse S. Poole American Legion Post 297 of Graceville. Pallbearers were Delbert's grandsons, Ryan McGill, Ross Wiegman, Chad Wiegman, Toby Wiegman, Shawn Wiegman, Rome Wiegman, Jason Jahnke, Adam Jahnke, and Nickolas Wiegman.
Visitation was Sunday from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. followed by a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Graceville. Visitation continued Monday one hour prior to the service at the church.
Delbert Leo Wiegman was born February 8, 1921, in Collis, MN, to Leo and Sophie (Snyder) Wiegman. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Collis. He attended school at St. Mary's Academy in Graceville, graduating in 1939. He served during World War II as a corporal in the US Army.
On September 17, 1949, Delbert married Laurraine Mich at St. Theresa's Catholic Church in Donnelly, MN. They made their home and a career in farming in the Graceville community. In 1986, Del retired from farming, but continued to reside on the farm. Recently, Delbert moved to the Minnesota Veterans Home in Fergus Falls.
Delbert was a member of the Certified Seed Association for the State of Minnesota and found great pride growing his yearly test plots. He was also actively involved in the Big Stone County Extension Service, Community Action Center and the Graceville Township Board. Delbert had a passion for gardening and enjoyed growing all types of produce from raspberries to his apple orchards. He also found great pleasure in growing all varieties of trees. In his younger days he took flying lessons, which later turned into a lifetime hobby of building and flying radio-controlled planes.
Delbert was a member of the Jesse S. Poole American Legion Post 297 of Graceville. He was a man of great faith, actively involved in the Holy Rosary Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.
Survivors include his wife, Laurraine of Fergus Falls; two daughters, Nancy (Dennis) McGill of Prior Lake, MN, and Elaine (Brian) Jahnke of Fergus Falls; three sons, Jerry (Melanie) Wiegman of Ortonville, MN, Dan (Carol) Wiegman of Graceville, and Michael (Robin) Wiegman of Clinton, MN; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Clem (Laurie) Wiegman and Bob Wiegman, both of Graceville; and two sisters, Pat Keltgen of Olivia, MN, and Phyllis (Rollie) Bauer of Graceville and one deceased sister, Jean Matthews.
