David N. Schwagel, 69, Browns Valley, MN, died Tuesday, December 31, 2013, at the Coteau des Prairies Hospital in Sisseton, SD.
Funeral services were Friday, January 3, 2014, at 10:00 a.m. at Bethania Lutheran Church in Rosholt, SD, with Rev. Nancy Quatier officiating. Military honors were provided by the William Krensing American Legion Post 58 of Browns Valley. Music was provided by organist Lana Sand. Honorary pallbearers were all of David's grandchildren.
Visitation was Friday one hour prior to the service at the church.
David Norbert Schwagel was born June 3, 1944, in Browns Valley, MN, to Norbert and Esther (Kruger) Schwagel. He attended school in Browns Valley, graduating in 1962. Following graduation, David enlisted in the Army where he served in Germany for two years.
On July 22, 1967, David married Kathy Plant in Browns Valley at St. Anthony Catholic Church and to this union six children were born, Joy, John, Dale, Jackie, Lee, and Susan.
David married Kathy Gettman on August 31, 1988, in Sisseton, SD. A daughter, CoraLee was born, and two children were brought into the marriage, Angela and Randy.
David worked at Larsons in Wheaton, MN for 25 years and as a slot technician at the Dakota Magic Casino for 14 years, retiring in 2011. He also operated the Coliseum dance hall in Browns Valley.
David was a member of the William Krensing American Legion Post 58 of Browns Valley. He enjoyed deer hunting with his boys, fishing, bingo, collecting Avon, and playing softball which he did for many years. He mostly loved his sheep on the family farm and his dog, Hope.
Survivors include his wife, Kathy of Browns Valley; children, Joy (Jeff) Mattson of Fergus Falls, MN, John (Hilary) Schwagel of Corona, SD, Dale (Robin) Schwagel of Dumont, MN, Jackie (David) Nelson of Browns Valley, Lee (Theresa) Schwagel of Corona, Susan Schwagel of Beardsley, MN, Angie (Andy) Haggerty of Alexandria, MN, Randy (Lori) Anderson of Fairmount, ND, and Cora (Colin) Nordquist of Browns Valley; 21 grandchildren; brothers, Tom Schwagel of Newark, DE, Dean (Mary) Schwagel of Browns Valley, Roger (Maureen) Schwagel of Beardsley, and Leon Schwagel of Browns Valley; sisters, Diane Krensing of Wahpeton, ND, and Deb (Irv) Frie of Osakis, MN; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
David was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Kenny; and a grandson, Devon.
