Darlene G. Nigg, 78, Browns Valley, MN, died Sunday, March 27, 2011, at the Browns Valley Health Center in Browns Valley.
Funeral services were Saturday, April 2, at 2:30 p.m. at the United Methodist Presbyterian Church in Browns Valley with Rev. Anna Williamson officiating. Music was provided by organist Neoma Ballhagen. Vocalists were the Moeller family.
Burial will be at a later date in the Sisseton Cemetery, Sisseton, SD. Honorary urn bearers were the Sisseton High School Class of 1950, Marjorie Eide, Jerry Sckerl, Noreen Stillson, Darlene Christianson, Shirley Peterson, Darlene Brown, and the Browns Valley Red Hat Ladies. Active urn bearers were Layne Moeller, Jon Moeller, Lynn Nigg, Tim Nigg, Pete Jensen and Reg Nigg.
Visitation was Saturday one hour prior to the service at the church.
Darlene Gene was born October 2, 1932, in Andover, SD, to Roy H. and Grace D. (Knapp) Sjerven. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in Sisseton, SD. She attended school in Sisseton, graduating from Sisseton High School in 1950.
On April 28, 1951, Darlene married Don Nigg in St. Paul, MN. Don died June 20, 1987. On June 28, 1989, she married Glenn Hedrick in Browns Valley. Darlene worked at the Browns Valley Health Center as an activities director from 1971 to 1981.
Darlene was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church in Sisseton and later the United Methodist Presbyterian Church in Browns Valley, where she was involved in the UMP Women and served as superintendent of the UMPC Sunday school. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary #58 and a Cub Scout leader. Darlene was active in the Red Hat Ladies group where she served as a charter member "Queen Mom." For 30 years, she belonged to the Hills and Valley Riding Club and also enjoyed monthly gatherings with the SHS Class of 1950.
Some of Darlene's favorite activities included traveling, "snow-bird" traveling, painting, ceramics, rosemaling, crafts, crocheting and sewing. She enjoyed making wedding cakes, baking sweets and cookies and Norwegian culture. She loved dancing, horses, especially Arabians, and shopping, especially for shoes and jewelry. Darlene loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and enjoyed spending time and playing games and cards with them.
Survivors include her husband, Glenn of Browns Valley; three children, Sherry Gisi of Beardsley, MN, David (Mary) Nigg of Browns Valley, and Jean (Mark) Karst of rural Browns Valley; five grandchildren, David Johnson, Eric (Erika Backberg) Nigg, Megan (Adam) Hilpert, Tiffany (Curt) Myrum, and Francis Karst; six great-grandchildren, Alexis Johnson, Abbigail Hilpert, Sidney, Tosten, Valerie and Brooklyn Myrum; one great-great grandchild, David Johnson III; two special cousins, Arlen Sjerven and Janet Boos; eight step children, Jane (Tom) Kropelnick, Anita Mills, Carol (Don) Buckrey, Tom Hedrick, Gwen Hedrick, Joe Hedrick, and Bob Hedrick all of Minneapolis, MN, and Brenda (Rob) Greene of California; five step grandchildren; and two step great-grandchildren.
Darlene was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Don.
