Darleen M. Braaten, 88, New Effington, SD, passed away Thursday March 2, 2017, at Sanford Palliative Care in Fargo, ND.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, March 7, 2017, at 2:00 p.m. at Bethania Lutheran Church in Rosholt, SD, with Rev. Nancy Quatier officiating. Music will be provided by organist and vocalist Lana Sand.

Burial will be in the Bethania Cemetery, Rosholt. Pallbearers will be Dale Ceroll, Tom Bisek, Gerard Zach, Linus Zach, David Koch and John Tritten. Visitation will be from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m at the church on Tuesday.

Darleen Marie Braaten was born August 10, 1928, in Great Bend, ND, to Fred and Wilhelmina (Stoltenow) Trittin. She was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Great Bend. She attended Brandenburg #5 and graduated from Wahpeton High School. Following graduation, Darleen attended two summers at Valley City Teacher College where she earned her teaching certificate. She then taught at various country schools.

On June 24, 1952, Darleen married Allen Wayne Braaten at Trinity Lutheran Church in Great Bend. They were married for 53 years. One son, Wayne, was born. Allen passed away January 19, 2006.

Darleen enjoyed flowers, gardening, cooking, cross stitching, crocheting, and later, setting puzzles. She was a member of Bethania Lutheran Church and the Ladies Circle.

Survivors include her son Wayne Braaten of New Effington; sisters, Margaret Stowe of New Effington, and Mary Ann Tritten of Great Bend; sisters-in-law, Joan Trittin of Hankinson, ND, and Evangeline Muehler of Fairmount, ND; cousins, Darrell Stoltenow and Robert Mark of Wahpeton, ND, and Marlys Reese of Eau Claire, WI; many nieces and nephews, and her dog, Freddy.

Darleen was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Wilhelmina Trittin; and one brother, Wesley C. Trittin.
