Darin Garland, 45, Rapid City, SD, passed away Tuesday, December 2, 2014, after a brief, but courageous battle with cancer.
A memorial service was held Monday, December 8, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. at Kirk Funeral Home in Rapid City with Pastor David Piper officiating.
A Celebration of Life service was held Friday, December 12, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. at Bethania Lutheran Church in Rosholt, with Pastor Nancy Quatier officiating. Music was provided by organist Lana Sand and vocalist Sheree Hogan.
Darin Lee Garland was born December 13, 1968, to Fred and Mary Garland in Redfield, SD. The family moved to Rosholt, SD, in 1976. Darin attended grade school in Rosholt, and graduated from Rosholt High School in 1987. Darin attended Northern State University in Aberdeen, and graduated with a degree in Education in 1993.
After graduating from college, Darin entered the field of Special Education; he began his teaching career as a Special Education teacher and coach in Parkston, SD. Darin continued his career in Special Education and coaching for more than 20 years, working at Circle of Nations School in Wahpeton, ND, Tiospa Zina School in Agency Village, SD, and the Black Hills Children's Home in Rockerville, SD. Darin was blessed with a gift of immeasurable generosity that enabled him to impact the lives of hundreds of kids over the years.
Darin married Daphne Keeble in 2006. Together, they had one daughter, Maryann.
Darin thoroughly enjoyed the outdoors. He loved to hunt, fish, and play golf. Some of his fondest memories were sitting by the campfire with family and friends and sharing stories.
Darin is survived by his daughter, Maryann, Rapid City; his parents, Fred and Mary Garland, Sturgis; his brother, Brett (Patty) Garland, Piedmont, SD, and their two children, Dan and Ryan. He also leaves his faithful black lab, Emma.
A memorial has been established in Darin's name, cards may be sent to Kirk Funeral Home, 1051 E. Minnesota St., Rapid City, SD 57701.
Arrangements were in the care of Kirk Funeral Home in Rapid City, and Eggers Funeral Home in Rosholt.
