Charles Roy Sweetmilk

Charles Roy Sweetmilk, age 97, Veblen, SD, passed away Sunday, October 27, 2019, at Twin Town Villa in Breckenridge.

Funeral services will be Saturday, November 16, at 1:00 p.m. at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Veblen with Pastor Karie Geyer officiating.

Burial will be in the Veblen Community Cemetery.

Charles Roy Sweetmilk was born to Charles Albert and Severine "Sarah" (Bjorkum) Sweetmilk on March 6, 1922, in Veblen, SD. He was baptized and confirmed at the Veblen Lutheran Church. He attended grade school in Veblen and graduated from Veblen High School. On December 11, 1942, Roy enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He served in the Asiatic and Pacific theaters during the war aboard the USS Luzon (ARG-2), advancing to the rank of Chief Motor Machinist Mate. He was honorably discharged January 8, 1946. For his service, he received the Asiatic-Pacific Medal, the American Theater Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, and the Victory Medal.

On December 8, 1945, Roy was united in marriage to Doris Agnes Vig at the Palestine Lutheran Church, rural Veblen. To this union a son, John, was born. They resided in Chicago, IL, until 1950, then moved back to Veblen.

Roy was employed by Buda Diesel Manufacturing Company, Standard Oil Company and Veblen Public Schools until retiring in 1984.

Roy was a member of the Eddie Robertson American Legion Post 76. He served on the Veblen City Council, Veblen School Board, and the church council.

Survivors include his son, John (Renee) Sweetmilk of Eagan, MN; granddaughters, Rachelle (Tad) Albee of Farmington, MN, Melissa Sweetmilk of Apple Valley, MN, and Megan (Brent) Onan of Frisco, TX; great-grandchildren, Hannah and Isabelle Albee, and Brenden and Weston Onan.

Roy was preceded in death by his wife, Doris; parents, Charles and Sarah; two brothers, Alvin "Babe" Hanson and Casper Hanson; and sisters, Bernice Raaen and Gladys Wilson.
