Carole Ann Watrous, 65, New Effington, SD, died Sunday, January 3, 2010, at the Rosholt Care Center, Rosholt, SD. Funeral services were Wednesday, January 6, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. at Faith Lutheran Church in New Effington with Rev. Tryphine Schruba, Rev. Charles Bunk, Rev. Charles Bade, and Rev. William Olsen officiating. Music was provided by Debra Bredvik, Carolyn Fladland, Melanie Yost and Colleen Halverson. Pallbearers were Keith Bostrom, Tom Leverson, Jerold Krueger, Bob Schultz, Dayle Haaland, and Jerry Borgen. Funeral services were Friday, January 8, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. at Sunnycrest United Methodist Church in Marion, IN, with Rev. Charles Ternet officiating. Burial was in the Mt. Etna Cemetery, Mt. Etna. Carole Ann was born June 18, 1944, in Portland, IN, to Lester and Thelma (Fowerbaugh) Resler. She attended school in Hagerstown, IN, graduating from Hagerstown High School in 1962. Carole earned a bachelor's degree in education in 1966 and a master's degree in education in 1970 from Ball State University in Muncie, IN. On December 23, 1974, Carole married Harold Watrous in Honolulu, HI. Carole was proud to be a life-long teacher. She taught Headstart and elementary school in various locations including Warsaw, IN, Maui and Oahu, HI, Anoka, MN, Poplar and Malta, MT, Deer River, MN, and Lemmon, SD. In addition to teaching Headstart in Lemmon, Carole also developed the preschool program at Calvary Christian Preschool. She also served as a librarian for the city of Lemmon and as the Youth Services Librarian in Moorhead, MN. In 2003, Harold and Carole moved to New Effington. After substitute teaching in the New Effington, Veblen, Sisseton, and Rosholt communities, Carole worked as a paraprofessional for the Sisseton School District. Last year, she was employed as the first and second grade teacher at Veblen. Carole was scheduled to work as a paraprofessional in the New Effington School this year, but resigned because of poor health. Carole enjoyed singing, scrapbooking, traveling, gardening, bird watching, and reading. Survivors include her husband, Pastor Harold Watrous of New Effington; two children, Bethany Watrous of Santa Monica, CA, and Brant Watrous of Seattle, WA; mother, Thelma Resler of Marion, IN; two sisters, Norma Shafer of Marion, and Lois Resler of Honolulu; an aunt, Dorotha Miller of Warsaw, IN; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, Lester Resler; and two brothers, Eugene Resler and Paul Resler.
