Bonnie K. Sand, 60, Rosholt, SD, passed away Saturday, June 14, 2014, at her residence after a courageous year and a half battle with Lou Gehrig's disease.
Funeral Mass was Tuesday, June 17, at 10:30 a.m. at St. John's Catholic Church in Rosholt with Father Joseph Hitpas, OMI, officiating. Music was provided by organist Lana Sand and vocalists Paul and Lana Sand.
Burial was in the St. Nicholas Cemetery, rural Rosholt. Honorary pallbearers were all of Bonnie's past and present coworkers at the Rosholt Care Center and all of the residents of the Rosholt Care Center that Bonnie loved caring for. Active pallbearers were Lexi Hauge, Ben Hauge, Jon Hull, Aaron Solvie, Laurie Solvie and Justin Rikimoto.
Visitation was Monday from 4:30 to 7:00 p.m. at the Eggers Funeral Home in Rosholt. Visitation continued Tuesday one hour prior to the service at the church.
Bonnie Kay was born June 17, 1953, in Fergus Falls, MN, to Robert and Violet (Williams) Hauge. She attended and graduated from Fergus Falls High School. After high school, Bonnie moved to Minneapolis to be a nanny for a short time. After returning to Fergus Falls, Bonnie worked at Medallion Kitchens. Shortly after returning to Fergus Falls, she also met the love of her life, Larry, and moved to Rosholt.
On March 20, 1976, Bonnie married her best friend and the love of her life, Larry Sand at Fergus Falls. To this union, Bonnie and Larry had two children, Christy and Nicole.
On June 17, 1976, Bonnie started her lifelong passion of caring for others and started work at the Rosholt Care Center. She loved caring for the residents. Bonnie worked at the care center until she had to resign due to health problems in September 2012.
Bonnie loved spending time with Larry and her girls out hunting and watching eagles. Bonnie also loved collecting recipes and cookbooks. Her greatest joy was when she became a "Granny."
Survivors include her husband, Larry of Rosholt; daughters, Christy (Herman, Jr.) Kauk of Wishek, ND, Nicole (Joey) McGuire of Rosholt; a special "son" Justin (Niki) Rikimoto of Rosholt; grandchildren, Austin Kauk, MacKenzie Schmitz, Jonathan Kauk, Annabelle Kauk, Alexander Schmitz, Herman Kauk III, Emily Kauk, Sterling McGuire and Amelia McGuire; brother, Gary Hauge of Fergus Falls; sisters-in-law, Linda Sand of Casa Grande, AZ, Carol (Norm) Carlson of Rosholt, and Anna (Hauge) Schmidt of Franklinville, NJ; and many nieces, nephews, family and friends.
Bonnie is preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Violet Hauge; brother, Dale Hauge; mother and father-in-law, Lawrence and Irene Sand; brothers-in-law, Rodney Sand and Henry "Hank" Hull, Jr.; and son-in-law, Chris Schmitz.
