Betty Lou (Hoss) Carl was born on October 25, 1934, to Peter and Hilma (Hanson) Hoss near New Effington, SD. She grew up on farms around New Effington and Sisseton, SD, until 1942 when the family moved to Washington. After her mother died in 1944, the family moved back to New Effington.
Betty married Claude Carl on December 27, 1951, in Webster, SD. They had five children – three daughters and two sons. They lived in New Effington, Minneapolis, Coon Rapids, MN, and then back to New Effington where they bought their farm. They also lived in Renville, MN, and Fargo, ND, during the sugar beet season, always coming back to the farm that they loved. Claude passed away on January 17, 2004, at his beloved farm.
Betty worked various jobs throughout her life. She enjoyed her last job at Mikey's Bar and Grill in New Effington the most. She loved showing off her cooking skills and visiting with the customers.
Betty was good at everything she tried, whether it was ceramics, painting, or sewing. She loved to cook and bake. Her family's favorites were her homemade donuts, buns, cinnamon rolls, any kind of pie, and meatballs and gravy. Our family gatherings were always full of delicious food.
