Anthony “Tony” Widhalm, Jr. passed away unexpectedly on May 1, 2026, at Coteau des Prairies Hospital in Sisseton, SD, leaving behind a legacy of hard work, devotion, and deep love for his family.
Tony was born on October 2, 1940, in Humphrey, Nebraska, to Anton and Matilda (Schafer) Widhalm.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Anton and Matilda (Schafer) Widhalm; his parents-in-law, Harold and Julia (Carlson) Gallagher; and his siblings, Urban (Norma) Widhalm, Jerome (Shirley) Widhalm, James (Eleanor) Widhalm, Matilda (Louie) Miller, Lorraine (Lawrence) Birnbaum, Imelda (Jerome) Schmit, and Mary Jane Stueve.
Tony is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Mary Lou (Gallagher) Widhalm; his children, Kevin Widhalm of Rosholt, Susan Olson of Peoria, AZ, and Sandy (Ken) Murphy of Marshall, MN; and his cherished grandchildren, Julia (Jake) Northrup of Tucson, AZ, Scott Olson of Peoria, AZ, Kayla (Paul) Citrowske of Dallas, TX, and Kyle Murphy of Waterford, CT.
He is also survived by his brothers-in-law, Dr. Stan (Joyce) Gallagher of Wheaton, MN, and Gene Stueve of Wheaton; niece and nephew, Brad Gallagher of Alexandria, MN, and Kris Gallagher of Concord, NC; and many more nieces and nephews.
Tony dedicated over 68 years to farming (both grain and cattle), a life that reflected his strong work ethic, resilience, and deep commitment to the land. He was a skilled craftsman and took great pride in his work. He will also be remembered for playing Santa for area children for many years.
Tony especially cherished time spent with Buddy, his dog, and his grandchildren. Whether sharing stories, laughter, or quiet moments together, they brought him immense joy, and his love for them was evident in all he did.
Funeral Mass will be held Monday, May 11, at 10:30 a.m. at St. John’s Catholic Church in Rosholt with Father Ken Lulf officiating. Music will be provided by organist Cindy Marohl.
Burial will be in the St. Nicholas Cemetery, rural Rosholt. Urn bearers will be his grandchildren and their spouses.
Visitation will be Sunday, May 10, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Eggers Funeral Home in Rosholt and will continue Monday morning one hour prior to the service at the church.
He will be remembered for his steady presence, his dedication to family and God, and the quiet strength that defined his life.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials be designated to the Tekakwitha Living Center Activities Department.
