Adam Phillip Sand was born on September 25, 1975, to Paul and Lana (Anderson) Sand of Rosholt, SD. He was baptized at St. John's Catholic Church and confirmed at St. Joseph Lutheran Church. As a child, Adam loved the outdoors, his pets, and most of all, living across the lawn from Grandpa John and Grandma Violet. They always had time for him, teaching and babysitting, and of course, eating Grandma's famous "Granny Buns". He attended Rosholt Schools and graduated from RHS in 1994. He was a part of the Raiders "Fearsome Foursome" senior football players.
On May 23, 1998, Adam married his high school sweetheart and soul mate, Sonja Braun, at St. John's Catholic Church. They moved to South Bend, IN, where Adam received a Bachelor's Degree in Business from Trine University and Sonja received a Doctorate Degree in Chemistry at Notre Dame. Adam played on the Chemistry Department's flag football team which won the right to play the championship game twice on the Notre Dame field and came out victorious. A highlight of their marriage was when Adam was pulled over for speeding on the Chicago Skyway, and the policeman made a deal to let him off if he would sing a love song to Sonja - right there over his loudspeaker . . . which he did.
Adam and Sonja then moved to Pacific Palisades where Adam received his double Master's Degrees in Business and Dispute Resolution from Pepperdine University and Sonja worked as a postdoctoral scientist at the University of Southern California. Over the years, Adam worked for the U.S. Army where he supported engineering technology for missile defense platforms, was employed in artificial intelligence at Bridgewater Associates, and was currently working with Microsoft in global cloud computing. He was proud to be a founding member of the Crystal Park Volunteer Fire Department.
Adam and Sonja were blessed with three beautiful children - daughters Nevina and Mataya, and son, Dominic. His family always knew and felt the love he had for them. Fun and adventure were always a part of their lives. They lived by the motto, "This Family Was Made for Adventure!". Some of Adam's favorite activities to do with his family were downhill skiing and watersports. He found so much joy in teaching his children how to fish, ski, shoot bow and arrow, camp in bear country, have faith in God, and love unconditionally. His nieces and nephews were treated often to great games of "Bear in the Woods" on summer nights at the farm.
Adam was known for his big thinking and sound discernment for those who sought his counsel for life on this planet. His love for his family was always apparent and he blazed a trail through the woods of life. His technical and organizational skills professionally were impressive.
Always in our hearts, Adam is survived by his wife, Sonja; daughters, Nevina and Mataya; and son, Dominic; his parents, Paul and Lana Sand; brother Benjamin (Natalie) Sand and sister Mara (Seth) Walter; his father and mother-in-law, Albert and Marceil Braun; brothers-in-law, Jean', Jaime, Joel (Carol) and Stephen (Julie) Braun; sister-in-law Suzanne (Aaron) Maassel; loving nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends across the country.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, John and Violet Anderson and Meinard and Dolores Sand; a sister-in-law, Dana VanStaalduine; aunt, Jean Anderson Hruby; and uncles, Philip Anderson, Brian Sand, and John "Butch" LeClair.
